I dont think you can make it less tall yourself, unless tou're extremely experienced with cutting and fabricating. As for shorter throws, if your cable it similar to a 5.5 gen, I dont see why not. I'm not too sure about a 6th gen tbh. Don't know much about them. However for a 5.5 gen you can tell simply by removing the sfety pin and holding the cable while having someone feel the shorter throws of the shifter. You don't even have to drill until you're certain it's do-able.
Like i said, And not gonna lie and pretend like I know crap about the 6th gens engine bays. But If there's a cable similar to 5th, I don't see why not.. Btw shows u searched. This thread was like 20 pages down lol.

Thanks for the replies regarding my '05. I would have posted my inquiry in the 6th gen forum but I am not allowed to post yet (I guess cause I'm a newbie). Pardon the ignorant question but where do I find the end of the shift cable in order to make the adjustment? I am assuming I need to be under the car, correct?

From above, on the driver's side... not under the car. Found this picture of 6th gen linkage at this thread:
