Raced a New Maxima!

I was visiting family in St Joseph, MO when a black (I think) Maxima pulled up behind, went around me, then got stopped by a light in frontof me. It was a 5th gen and he took off hard from the line (it was a manual transmission). I was with my brother, and we had my trunk and back seat packed with junk for our week off - an extra 300 lbs at least, including him).
Anyway, I busted on after him and caught up quickly to his passenger door at about 50mph. I kept pulling on him but never got in front (GP's suck over 100mph anyway), I shut down @ about 85 as a truck pulled out in front of me a little way down the road. Anyway...Kudos to that Maxima, I never knew they could get that fast (I don't know if it was stock or not - I doubt it though). It was a bad *** race, I've walked many Crustang GT's and Cobras and I'm sure that Maxima would have too! Anyway, much respect for you guys and your rides (my mom is on her 2nd Maxima, a '98)

What kind of mods do you have on your ride? Theres no way a "stock" GTP with all that extra weight would have a chance against a 02 6spd max.

How do you know it was a 2K2 Max and not a 2K1 Max for sure? You did lose so either way your story isn't far fetched.

I have no idea...I gues the subject should have read 'Newer Maxima' Sorry...I just know It was newer than my mom's so it might be a '01 - probably was, I doubt a new '02 owner would be that hard on his/her new baby right away anyway, besides, the only way I can tell an '02 is by the temp tags on ...sorry for the confusion, I don't know enough of the subtleties to tell the difference yet.

The tail lights are clear with orange and red in the middle. 02 6spd max's just hit the street a few weeks ago so maybe it was a auto or 01 5spd?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Raced a New Maxima!

The lights were round and red...I'm positive it was a 5-speed though, I heard the shift and he chirped it good into 2nd...so must've been an '01, either way - got my adrenaline going, I was much impressed. Also, @ that point my catback exhaust was all of 6hrs old and I had not reset the PCM (there was a little difference after I did though, not much, but a definite difference). I was creeping up on him pretty good so god only know what would have happened - he'd probably start pulling away @ 110 or so...just my guess

most definitly a 2000 or a 2001...the 2002 has 33 more horsepower than a 00 or 01 so you wouldnt of been able to pull on him whatsoever ...by the way its cool you came on here and said you couldnt pass em, most the time when GTP guys post they are ****ed off and claiming a maxima could never beet a GTP...so this is a switch

While I do agree the car was mostly likely a 2000 or 2001 model, Id disagree that his car would have had no chance whatesover against a 2002 Max.

A friend of mine has a 1999 GTP with similar mods to Tweekt_GTP. Ive driven his car many times and it pulls very hard. It also ran a 13.8@99 mph on street tires. I havent heard of any 2002 Max's stock or otherwise (short of FI or N2O) running that quickly.

I think a GTP could take a 2k2 stick or automagic off the line because of that engine's superior low-end torque. But on the highway or from a roll I think a 2k2 (stick or auto) would take a GTP (if it's stock)

Hmm... correct me if i'm wrong. But isn't the red round lights that of either the GLE or GXE? Wasn't the SE the one with black/smoke lights? If so, wouldn't that make this car a 4spd Auto?

Just curious.

Exactly my point. (GXE's being 4spd Auto).

Anyhow, GXE's are faster than SE's? I didn't know that.

Yup they are lighter in weight.
Besides most of the fast maximas on the .org are GXE's.

Now that i didn't know. Then again i didn't really track the 00's and 01's. For the 02's i know only the SE's come with a manual.

They're lighter overall, but as far as the 00-01 5spds go, the stock GXE wheels are 15" where as the majority of SE's are 17" and a good bit heavier. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that make more of a difference than 50lbs worth of options?

The only time I really payed attention to his lights was when he was stopped in front of me (although I guess he showed them to me almost the whole race..lol - I was paying attention to the road, it was a swooping gentle turn up a hill) So for obvious reasons his were red when I saw them (so they could have been the smoked SE lights). I only noted the shape since the new rear end is the only way for me to tell a '00+ Maxima from the back. It was most definitely a stick shift, he only shifted twice so he mustve been going around 85+ in 3rd (probably @ the bottom of 3rd by then), sound right? I'm 1000%positive it was stick though.
Interesting about the GXE faster than the SE...doesn't the stiffer suspension allow for a better launch on an SE?
I can tell you however that my 18s weigh a hell of a lot more than the stocks (which I have on now for winter) and there is a huge speed difference with these on (even though traction and cornering now suck), so maybe 15s on a GXE have enough of a weight difference to edge out the SE...but then again it wouldn't make sense for the Sport Edition to be trounced by the base model...just my .02
