dumb question
dumb question
After another 2k2 SE owner told me about his wheels being stolen, I went out and got myself a set of wheel locks.
dumb question number 1: Which way do I turn to remove lug nuts? Counter-clockwise?
dumb question number 2: How important is it to use a tourque wrench? The manual suggests tightening to 80 lbs. What is the tollerance?
Thanks.

So, what happens if I don't torque my lugs?
Will my rotors stay straight?

Your wheels would fall off if you don't torque your lugs. You can confirm my statement by doing an experiment.

Another dumb question
How much should I expect to pay for a tourque wrench? While on my lunch break I went to Home Depot and saw one for $55. This one was capable of 250 lbs. I'm hoping I can get one for significantly less than that, but what do I know.
Thanks for all your help.

torque wrench...
if all you are going to use this for is your lugs and maybe a FSTB later
then just get one of these
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...itemnumber=239
btw, they are only like $11 in the store, if one is in your area. Again, this thing wont stay calibrated long for day to day use, but is great for this stuff. And re-checking after your tires are replaced or rotated. It will save you many trips to service for warped rotors.
somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think its a 21mm socket.

The theory can be applied to tire shops (i.e. Firestone). Throw small metal object in front of the shop so you'll have return customers. hehehe

I have never heard of this....
Someone actually worries about tightening down the lug nuts to spec! I am surprised nobody mentioned that they should be tightened in a criss-cross fashion. Also...it is a good idea to re-check the lugs after a day of driving.
BTW....I can't imagine going out a buying a torque wrench for this type of duty....trust me the dealers don't do this, and neither does NASCAR (Maybe they should...it would be fun seeing them use the torque wrench on each lug!)

Re: I have never heard of this....
Dealers should torque lug nuts properly, as it can cause warped rotors if they're too tight, but they mostly just use air wrenches.
I don't think NASCAR drivers would care about warped rotors over 500 miles though. They use some fancy high-speed stuff, though. Those suckers might actually kick off at whatever torque setting they want them tightened at

of course dealers dont do this...
rotors keep warping. Shops rely on the airtools to torque the lugs. There are also clutches on the air guns that can be preset at some torque level. unfortunately, they simply dont work. I saw my car done this way.. I had 110ft-lbs when he had dialed in 90. I immediately retorqued them in the parking lot. the owner came out and asked me what I was doing, I said "saving you from buying me new rotors." he thanked me.
the cross pattern is in the owners manual, you're right that's car maintenace 101.
