What would you say that 5.5 > 6th in performance?

One thing I like about A34s is the fact that there are more tuning capabilities from the standpoint of not having to cut and splice things (Utec, e-manage)

10 hp with a new rating system wont make up for 300 lbs difference.

I like 5.5 Better. 6th gen looks more of a 40 year olds car imo. but there are some wicked ones on here.

The styling is a matter of opinion. For me the 6th gen doesn't flow like the 5th gen or the 7th gen. As far as facts go:

Power to weight ratio is in favor of the 5.5 gen.

Interior quality is far better in the 5.5 gen. It seems like all Nissan interiors got really cheap for a few years in starting in 2004. They're better now but the 6th gen really suffered.

2003 was the last year the Max was built in Japan. 2004 was the first of a new generation AND the first in the new US factory. There were some quality issues in the 04 and 05 cars they had to sort out. 06+ would be the best year to start with.

If you want a stick, the tranny is better in the 6th gen. Unfortunately, they fazed it out in the later cars and left the auto as the only choice. Of course, it's not a big deal to slide the 6th gen tranny into a 5th gen and have the best of both worlds.

In my opinion, it would be better to spend less on a 5.5 gen and have money left over to do mods. Or, for around the cost of a nice 6th gen you could find an older G35. The coupe and sedan both come in a 6-speed and there are a LOT of performance upgrades.

so what about auto vs auto since 5.5gen has 4 gears while the 6th has 5 after 2004. You hit those rpms reallyyyy fast in a 6th gen. How hard would it be to put the 6th gen tranny in a 5.5 gen? does it really slide in cause i seems like it would be a bit harder than that.

the 6 speed could almost slide in. The 5 speed auto would basically need a whole rewiring of the car. Need 6th gen ECU, TCM ect ect.

You should have posted this in general. In the 5th gen forum you will get biased opinions... or, post this in the 6g forum and everybody will tell you how great the 6g is....

5.5 FTW!!! hhahaha

no. Just cause a car is faster doesnt make it better and just cause a car is slower doesnt make it worse.

I mean a Miata is one of the slower cars out there but its arguably the best car on the road dollar for dollar

5.5 no questions asked...after that year they started to look wack, but then you got some people like on the org that fix that and give it attitude, but the 5.5 already come with that....hand down 5.5 no offense to 6th gen owners

I still don't understand the OP question.

August, what's the point here? Are you looking to buy a 6th gen?

I refer to a manual tranny since the OP has a 6-speed already.

The 6th gen 6-speed goes right into a 5.5 gen car with no modification at all. Just remove the tranny and slide the 6th gen tranny in.

I might somewhere in the future but that is subject to change. So far what I like best is the independent rear suspension. They seem to handle well on the highway. And what I like about the 6th is exactly what I don't like about the 5.5th.

OK. Yeah, definitely the 6th Gen independent suspension is hands-down superior. Even if you tighten up your 5th gen suspension with mods, the 6th provides a far better handling ride. Ditto that for better brakes, and an improved 6MT (while it lasted).

But the 6th gen is also heavier, and the 3.5 was tweaked with an extra 10hp only... not enough to compensate. The 290 hp in the 7th gen, however, is quite noticeable.

That's all I got by way of comparison opinions.

Oh... and the 6th gen sunroof. Odd, but undeniably unique.

4spd auto in the 5.5 is actually not that bad, its shifts quick as well. Auto to auto the 5.5 is slightly quicker being 300 pounds lighter and actually being underrated in the torque it can get up and go for a relatively light sedan. I remember when Nissan uprated the 3.5 Alti's to the 5spd auto vs the 4spd auto of 02-04, the 1/4 times, trap speeds did not change... You just might get 1mile per gallon better.
