It's not our fault the 5th gen body is a fan of McD's gaining that extra 200lbs...

I swear, this thread is some kind of forum experiment, where you're the only one in on the joke.

So how's it working out for you? Pretty much as expected, or still a work in progress?

well, my boy's got a 04 6 speed, fujita cold air intake only, and my other boy has a 03 5speed, with a intake as well and whenever they race, the 6th gen absolutely annihilates the 5.5. I dono if its the driver, but I dont see how the 5th or 5.5 can come near the 6th gen performance wise. Looks wise 5th takes it IMO, but performance, stock for stock (pretty much) I dont see a 5.5 takes a 6th. personal opinion based on what I seen many times...

He doesn't have an 03 with a 5-speed.

5.5 gens are far more sporty and what you can call a MAXIMA
6th gens are more on the luxurious side
i would say from a dead stop a 5th gen would win

Exactly its probably an 01 as 6th gen cannot annihilate a 5.5 gen unless he was caught sleeping. 5.5 gen has pretty much proven to be the quickest Max until the 7th gen came out which is only a tad quicker. Plus we already had a poll a while back in the general forum and the 5th gen easily won the sportiest looking Maxima poll, I think the 4th or 7th came in second.

You cannot argue with physics, the 5.5 is faster in a straight line than the 6. Although, I wish the 5.5 had a rear suspension better than that of a pickup; a clear advantage of the 6.

Although the rear beam setup is clearly inferior in most ways to IRS it is superior to most solid axle designs, including pickups and minivans. They're not all created equal.

While not all solid axle suspension systems are equivalent (which is true for any system), just about any modern independent system is better than a solid axle system. The thought is based on ultimate mechanical grip. Comparing other factors, the 5.5's solid axle is almost certainly lighter than 6's IRS which contributes to its straight line advantage.

And on another note, the 'new' SAE power test/correction decreases the ultimate value (i.e. 255 'old' hp' would be ~252 'new' hp).

No, I added information; specifically the weight differences between the generations is partially attributable to the 'crappy' rear suspension.

Agreed but the crux of my post was that even among solid rear suspension some are better than others. And actually the beam can be superior to an IRS on smooth surfaces. IRS really shines in terms of overall ride quality and tire adhesion over bumps. I hadn't really bothered to address the weight difference as I wasn't attempting to compare IRS vs. beam.

Funny story about that. When I go to my brother's house, I park in his driveway and my 6-year-old neice is used to seeing my car from the front only. Yesterday, we were all at my sister's house and my car was parked out on the street and I guess this is the first time my neice has really seen my car from the side. She asked me "where is your car?" and when I pointed at it, she said "That's your car? It looks fast.".

She then had to get in, sit in the front and the back, listen to the stereo and put her head out the sunroof.

I've always thought the 5th Gen and 5.5 design resembled that of the 3rd gen which I fell in love with back in the early 90's, but I was an aircraft tech and I needed a truck more than anything else to carry my rollaway toolbox... Now comparing the 5.5 and 6th Gen...I love the 5.5 but I do think Nissan really did get it right with the 6.5 for the 6th Gen family. But I just can't see that 6th gen out handling the swifter more nimble, lighter weight, and lower cg 5.5! The 6.5 had 255 hp as well with an extra 250-300lbs added to it's wieght and that CVT crap! Don't like the *** heavy stance of most 6th gens. I really don't see alot of dropped 6th Gen to be honest. The 5.5 style wise, performance wise is a more complete sports sedan IMO...

Ditto that. Loved the 3rd Gen. ("Do you need a ride to the shareholders meeting?")

Our cars looks like a full-sized 3rd gen.

it was also in one of the stillen mag that the 5.5 was the fastest maxima (this was before the 7th, and i still think the 5.5 is faster)... like somebody said, maxima's seems to be made for the upper 40yr old man, not really sporty looking IMO, after the 5.5 i'd rather go with the G lines

5.5 hands down. My friend has an 04 maxima SL black on black and I love driving it from time to time. Its more of a "chillin" car. But the dash in the 5.5 looks way more sporty and sleek. I wouldnt mind having a 6th gen but it has to be auto. For a stick, you got to go with the 5.5 gen!

I own a 2003 SE TE 6-speed Majestic blue max with frost leather. I love it. I also have a 2005 SL 5-speed auto, Red with biege interior. I love both cars. The 5.5 gen is much more sporty. 6th gen is more luxury type. Both very fast. I absolutly love the frost leather, and I think that was only available on the 02-03's. I like the luxury of a power auto entry and exit on my 05. I like the power turn in mirrors on my 05. I like the giant sunroof on my 05. If I had to pick though, I would rather have a 6.5 Maxima over both.
I think the bose system is better in the 05. And I like the display screen on the 05, the seats are more comfortable as well.

However I think the 5th gen Maxima is the worst looking of all the Max's.

Agreed! The 3rd gen was the bomb, very luxurious for its time and in GXE form loaded that interior was hot. The dash with the electronic package looked like a Boeing 777 dash all electronic and it had HUD, the ride was very cadillac like as they floated over bumps. I sold my old 89 to co worker a few years back (had it since new) her and her son still roll that thing with 260,000 miles on the original motor!
