5.5gen Pulley Install - Annoying Problem!!

So, while trying to remove my stock pulley, I have a friend hold the brake to prevent the crank from turning. The pedal is mashed, and the stupid crank still turns. I can not remove the stock pulley until I prevent this movement. Any suggestions? I'm on a 6MT for the record.

You could remove the crank position sensor, and use a flathead screw driver to hold the flywheel in place.

Uh, your brakes prevent your rotors/axle from turning, not your crank.

I think this is exactly the way it's outlined to be done on most of the how-to websites. You just need to make sure you don't bend/shear any of the teeth off of your flywheel when lodging said screwdriver in.

Take it to a friendly shop and have them loosen it with a big impact gun, then gently snug it back up.

yeah my boy had this same problem and mostly needed a shop that would hit it with the impact gun real quick...

Impact gun would be the prefered method. You can also get a long breaker bar, put the end on the crank pulley bolt, and get the end of the wrench as close to the ground as possible, then crank the engine over for a second. Remember, lefty loosy, righty tighty, you need to have the wrench on the right side or it will just fling against the bottom on your car.
Last option would be a strap wrench around the crank pulley.

I'll have access to an impact gun here in a couple days. Thanks for the helpful info (for the majority). For the others, take into consideration that it was late and I was very tired, obviously not meaning crank...the crank shaft was on my mind when writing the thread. I type 100 wpm, errors happen. Glad I could provide laughs though. I probably would have as well.

About using a screwdriver on the flywheel...I'm a little apprehensive about putting 150+ft/lbs of torque on that screw driver's durability and possibly having it slip.

mtrai760, if the impact gun doesn't work, I'll attempt this. Thanks

This is what I did and it worked like a charm. My weak Dewalt impact wouldn't get the crank pulley bolt off.

See step 9 here for details:

^^^^+2 Or next time you hold the brake make sure the car is in gear (1st-6th)!
