AT to 6MT swap?

Hey all,

Just wanted some input. I've been thinking about seeing if I can get a 6MT for my Max before I continue modding, but before I do, I had a few questions for anyone who's done it/who knows more about the Max than I do.

1.) How much of a PITA is it to do this? I know this is by no means a one-day job, but what all does it involve besides dropping the AT and bolting in the 6MT as far as sensors, mounting points and so on?

2.) Will a 6th gen tranny bolt up to the 5.5, or are the housings, etc. different? I figured I'd be more likely to find a low-mileage 6th, 6.5 gen tranny than I would a 5.5.

3.) Did you have any problems after the swap? My dad is afraid that the Max will be plagued with all kinds of problems and not want to run right with a transmission swap. I've seen a few Hondas around my school with the swap done, and none of them have mentioned any serious problems.

Thanks in advance.

Why not use the car you already have??? ppl keep saying to go that route but really is it less a headache if you are paying??? turning your carback to stock headache+$$$, selling your car Dealing with lowballers and time... searching for a 6spd is depressing plus more $$$ (for me), putting in all the previous mods $$$... paying for inspection again, giving away $$$ to the MVA for tags, emissions time waster seems like a very lengthy process and more expensive if not the same price............... why not just save up the $$$ pay a mechanic for the swap and all is well???............ i was originally in the market for a 6spd when my job kinda shattered that dream, sometimes things dont go the way as planned but there are ways around it...

take it easy bro, it was just a suggestion! i just dont understand that if you wanted a 6mt, why not BUY a 6mt instead of going through the hassle of a swap..cause the money you are going to spend on a swap you would have been better off buying the 6mt to begin with!

naw naw, i didnt mean to come off like that i was just saying.... i really did want to buy a 6spd, i was using my work vehicle when my GF totalled my 2K... while saving, i was searching for 6spds (which is more expensive than auto) the very few i found was either more than 1000mi away or wouldnt offer financing for my bad credit... my job started bishing about the company vehicle and gave me a deadline to start leaving it at work, so about 3 days before that deadline i had to settle with whichever maxima comes my way, hence the auto in my sig... (me and my GM now dont get along, we keep our distance lol)

If I could find a 6MT around Nashville, I'd take it. The problem is they're so scarce. I've found a few, but one has almost 200k on it, and the other is listed for kind of a steep price. But I guess that's to be expected when they're so uncommon.

6MT maximas are hard to find and generally cost more than AT maximas. Plus you never know how much someone abuses a car besides yourself, so working on his own car probably gives him more peace of mind.

I don't understand the "buy local" constraint. If you're willing to spend thousands on mods, then why not spend the money to fly where ever to pick up your 5.5 6MT, or have it shipped to you?

I convert my A34 with a SE-R 6MT , Acutally a tranny shop did it for a trade off , im still running the Auto ECU with no issues right now.

the only issue is now coolant temp doesnt move so im sure it has something to do with the sensors.

Try getting the HSLD or Spec V SE-R tranny.

I have talked to several professional mechanics about this question because I wanted to do the swap as well... the answer they all gave me : sell your car and buy a 6mt... I know I know its hard to find one, take your time and search a lot, I bet you will eventually find one that works for you. Also, for your mods just pull everything off the car to transfer on new car... I have been keeping all my stock parts as I pull them for (if and when) I can get a 6spd.

Basically the mechanics said its way too much work and huge PITA not worth it. Also, they were concerned that you would have trouble getting everything to work properly. Most likely they said you would get it all hooked up and then double your working time troubleshooting problems...

btw this was my uncle and my friends dad, not a shop trying to overprice a job, but giving me an honest opinion.
