Squealing noise. What is it???

About 3 weeks ago, I started my car and there was a loud squeal. It sounded exactly the same (ie didn't increase or decrease in pitch or anything) no matter how fast I drove or what gear I was in. (it squealed out of gear too) It did this for about a minute and a half and then quit and I haven't had the problem since? I'm thinking a belt might be going? or a chain? What could that sound have been??!
Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can offer

since the belt adjuster is static on this car you might be able to tighten it a b it and help it out. just loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley and give the vertical bolt a few turns of a wrench. see if that helps. might be easier to go ahead and change the belt.
