Help Diagnosing whining 5 speed tranny

Hello all,

Need some help diagnosing why my tranny started whining lately. in a nut shell: 2000 max, 5speed with 197k miles on it. Original tranny, 3rd clutch - recent and replaced differential bearings, MT-90 fluid in.

The whining mostly happens in 1st and 2nd gear, when driving or coasting with gears engaged. The noise goes away when stopped. There is slight whine thats been there for few years, and is still there, but the new noise is much louder and progressed only over the past week.

I think its not the clutch throwout bearing, cause when I press on the pedal - everything is quiet.

I am suspecting input and/or output shaft bearings. Can anyone chime in, maybe something else?

Thanks

Whine in 1st gear isn't anything to worry about. So there is no noise when stopped in nuetral with the clutch out? That's a little bit of a good sign. I wonder about the dif bearings, is there any seal leakage or play? Was the pre-load measured and adjusted (was it shimmed?)

When in neutral I have no noise. When I replaced Diff bearings, I did measure preload and installed the right shim as directed by the FSM; this was done two-three years ago.
I have no leaks from the tranny at all now. I checked the fluid few months ago, it was good.

This noise only started progressing few weeks ago..

oh, and another observation - when coasting and trying to engage into first (its impossible unless the car is stopped or you match the rpm) the tranny will produce somewhat higher frequency whine until engaged.

I am willing to replace the bearings, just don't want to open it up, and find out that something else is gone, and wait for parts to arrive with no car.

Also, i looked at rockauto.com they have input and main bearings. Are they the same on each shaft, meaning if I get 2 of each I'll be OK? They are different part # from the dealer.
Who else may have these bearings cheaper?

Thanks alot
