gas smell

I have a 2000 max, every time I drive the car It smells really really high of gas outside the car. I recently got a code for the EGR, could this be what is causing it? thanks for any help

Your code will be p0445

Seems that this has been happening to a lot of org members lately, this is the third thread about it. Your evap canister (more specifically the valve/solenoid has gone bad. check out this thread...

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...445-p1448.html

Theres mention of an electrical short circuit which might actually have more merit than the thread gave it overall. I just recently replaced my whole canister as well as the valve and im still having the same problem which was diagnosed by a mechanic with the "smoke test" which is supposed to be really legit.

Im now thinking that it was this supposed electrical short that might have caused it. I would call around and ask prices for the "evap system smoke test" for a better diagnosis.

You will probably end up replacing the valve or more likely the valve and canister. Read that thread and PM some people who did the valve independently

Ive been driving around w that fume problem for a while and it just seems to effect my gas mileage

Goodluck

Is the gas smell worse when you fill up?

From my experience, the code and smell actually went away usually when i filled up, and the light would come back on along with the smell when i hit about 50% fuel capacity. This is another symptom that i thought itwas my evap system and not the gas tank... because when half full, the tank has a lot of fumes in it compared to when full.

rroderiques77, if the case where it happend when full, is that indicating the gas cap or what?

Gas cap
The fuel sending unit could be leaking (common)
Filler neckm fuel line or gas tank.
I highly doubt EGR is related.
Do you have any EVAP codes?

The only code i get is an EVAP one of P0445, the large EVAP system leak... generally either meant gas cap or evap solenoid. Since i got the smoke test they told me it was the solenoid on the canister, however im still having problems... I guess i might as well spend the few bucks on the gas cap... Do i have to get a nissan spec one or will any generic Autozone/ebay cap do just fine?

Thanks

Get a factory cap. Don't mess with the aftermarket garbage.
Did you have the solenoid replaced? I would assume the canister is one whole unit which includes the solenoid and hoses.
If you have and evap code, you can probably rule out the possibility of a raw fuel leak.

I replaced the solenoid because thats what they said was broken (stuck open) and the canister along with it because the bolts usually break (which they did). Ill look into getting that gas cap. Thank you for your input

So the EVAP code returned after the canister was replaced?

Yup, a half tank of gas later it came on after the repair. Filled up, so it went away, full tank gone thru didnt come back. Filled up then used half of a tank, smelled the gas and then a couple of miles later the code registered on again.

Im starting to think its some sort of electrical short like another poster suggested
