OK...Been reading and researching the ssv4 for a minute now and the pros and cons of this sick *** mod for our auto maximas and just when im bout to drop the hammer and get this I end up jumpin in one of my boys 6spd max's and its like damnnnnn...i want a stick but seeing as though I d k anyone in real life w/the ssv4 I cant do a real comparison so I am looking for the feedback and opinions of other enthusiast to narrow my choice down...I basically want a max i can shift at will for mostly aggresive driving and some track runs that i plan on for summer 2010...plz let me know what setup you would run and why (or why not) Thanks in advance,
Sicko Sci
oh yeah...I would also like to run a small shot of NOS(50-75 shot) with either setup as well

does anyone have a suprastick installed and working in a max? thought i saw a thread but the guy couldnt get it to work...or maybe he did, i dont recall..
Aaron92 SE (3rd gen with full 3.5 ECU/wiring swap) is running SSV4 on his car.
Well SS is def. cheaper and less time consuming to install and more manageable in traffic. But you're missing two gears so...

- 6MT
- 6MT pedal assembly
- 6MT ECU(?)
- Labor or lots of time
EDIT Rochester is 5 posts behind me

iirc, my 6spd in 4th tops out at ~125mph, hes going to need more than a 50-75 shot to hit that trap

Ok I think im the first with a SS on a 5.5 using the stock TCM. I have to say it is a headache but I dont have much time to figure it out. Im guessing one weekend working on it constantly and tuning it you can be done. The problem I'm running into is the speed sensor wire and which one to tap and where. plus I dont believe you can use the cruise control to change gears, our wiring is different then the 4th gens. if you want any additional info pm me and ill tell you all about it
Senior Member
Im pretty sure there a are few guys with SS in the max, Jime being one of them. I plan on getting one after deciding 6mt swap is too expensive/too much work to be worth it. Get a SS with a new TCM. You can wire the shifting on your cruise buttons, you just need an extra switch to choose cruise vs SS controls on that set of buttons. Or you can install paddle shifters and do it that way too.
Also, If you plan on getting a nitrous setup I would stick with the auto because it is actually better for spraying.

Jime and Aaron both use it as a stand alone and im piggy backing that the difference. and I'm pretty sure if you try to use the cruise control you will lose your cruise control functions even if wired on a separate switch. I'm not saying don't do the SS or not to try it or challenge me, It would be great if someone figured this out cause i thought it was more Plug N Play but with the 5.5 gen thats not the case. Ive been working closely with Garrett Rowe the CEO of the SS to help iron out these issues

in terms of the 6speed swap,..parts wont be terrible to find,.. but if you or you and some buddies dont have the ability to do it yourself and have your car layed up for a while then its not worth it IMHO,.. labor would be wayyy too much..

Sell your car and get a 6mt once you run across one in your area. I don't think you'll be thinking "it's the same car" type theory. Definitely a difference in hp, and fun. The supra sport imo IF set up correctly would be 50% as fun as actually shifting in and outta gears, but I just like the feel of a clutch/shifter more than an auto... jus my 0.2$
Senior Member
Call me a newb if you want but, I never heard if this until now but I think I just found the next mod im doing after I get my suspension finished
I just can't believe that it's only $350! I just wish there was a 1/4 track near me so I could do a before & after comparo....

I mostly agree with that, about MT vs. Auto. However, there are some OEM automatics that can be fun. The Infiniti G37 automatic has 7 forward gears, and is an absolute delight to bump up and down manually.Originally Posted by e-subliminal-2

And the Volkswagon CC 2.0T automatic has 6 forward gears, with a dual-clutch that's a blast to drive. (Yeah, dual-clutch, in torquey little turbo for seriously reasonable cost. Who knew?)
And if you can drink the kool-aid (which I can't), the new Maxima CVT automatic is actually lots of fun to drive in sport-mode. Stoopid, but fun.

1st off thank you 2 everyone for their ultra-swift replies...i didnt expect 2 get so much feedback in such a short amount of time Max.org is truely the ****...
To King James- I thought the ssv4 was plug n play too...I guess ill pm you about the kinks that need to be worked out with it
To those that said "sell my car" to get a 6spd-NEVER!!! I am not super-modded like some of you but I gotta good amount into to it now and even tho i'd have 6 gears to play with, i'd have to start from the bottom again modding and my car would look regular as hell lol Thanx for the suggestion(s) tho
I drive my lil' sisters 4th gen time to time and I DO have alotta fun bangin' thru the gears but when the fun is over that **** gets annoying so i thought the ssv4 might be the best of both worlds,my girl just gotta 09' g37 sedan and the tiptronic is FUN as hell in that car...so yes i guess i am leaning a lil more toward the ssv4
I heard the 6spd tranny has the infamous "6th gear grind?!?" what the **** is that??? def don't sound good...would 5spd swap be worth it or is it the same **** involved except minus 1 gear???
King James said you couldnt wire it to the cruise control buttons in the 5.5 gen and an extra switch wouldnt work either...so would paddle shifters be the cure for this??? I read the ssv4 also corrects tranny slippage ALSO but would it also be a good Idea to rebuild the auto trans before this mod? ( I was looking at the transgo shift kits and tranny cooler)
The current performance mods I have are a CAI and custom catback w/Apr muffler...Ive had the car since 2k7 and tho Ive been a member since I got my car in stock form I am still learning so forgive my lack of maxima knowlege
My goal is to have the car running low 13's/high 12's (is this unreasonable w/out FI?) on spray but I know the trans is a key component to have a "Fast" car so i am focusing all my $$$/time to get this bulletproof before doing other ****...THANX again to all the MAxima OG's who have given me feedback so far,

really? i had no idea the 6spd and 4 auto had different gears? thanks captain obvious!
to the OP, there is no 6 gear grind, some people have problems with a 3rd gear grind under high rpms

I've only heard about 3rd gear crunching on 5.5 gens, this is only a problem if you swap in a transmission from 02-03 Maximas due to weak syncros. If you get one from a 6th gen ('04+) you will not have this problem. Plus the 6th gen gearbox has slightly more aggressive final drive gearing so acceleration will be even quicker.Originally Posted by SCI

People are doing this N/A. JayPee_99 is running high 12s and I'm sure you can get low 13s as long as your launch is good and you get some more bolt-ons and something to tune with.Originally Posted by SCI

yes, you will be able to run low 13/high 12 with the auto and def with a 6. With a good tune, a very lightly modded 6spd and a 50shot will do low 13 all day and with a good set of rubber, 12's are def there. In an auto, with a good tune the 50 will get you low 13's but it might take the 75 to get 12's unless you have all the supporting mods (headers, 3" exhaust, driver mod, etc)

Would it be necessary to have the transgo shift kit installed AND get the ssv4? Or is it possible to get away with just one? Would the be redundant? Or no? i have been talking with Jime and Aaron on this and if i recall right the SS and the DR mod is all you need but to each their own

in terms of your CAI,.. i hope its not an injen,.. because that will kill your 1/4 and trap times
,.. you need a WAI with a block plate,..
those times are possible,.. but you better be a damn good driver with some expensive rubber

whoa...its like everyone here knows the 5.5 gen in and out lol and just gave me way more to think about
I wont be doin anything until around after Jan so I gotta lil time 2 dwell on this info provided by the Max Gods...
question: Whats the diff between using this as a standalone and a piggyback???I kinda know but need a lil insight
I didnt know the 6th gen 6spd can fit in the 5.5gen...thats ****in sick with the better final drive for better acceleration
I be seeing dudes get blasted on here for not searching for **** so dont smoke my boots for this but...I couldnt really find how much the 6spd swap is gonna be,I got a couple homies that can do the work so I guess i just need the price range of ALL the parts together
I ALSO WAZ unaware the auto iz better for spraying so I guess thats 1 positive to having an auto trans
and now that Yall let me know low 13's-high 12's are realistic I am very excited
Ive also read jimes post countless times and it seems like he got it going pretty good at one time so as a standalone it works right? I like the lcd monitor showing what gear you are in too...seems like this mod will give u extra cool points at car shows too seeing theres only a handful of ppl who even know about this...I gotta modified mag and sum dude is runnin 550 hp sc300 boosted lexus w/soarer motor and is using the ssv4!!! he also is running raybestos performance clutch packs and bands w/ his auto trans...so i guess this **** works somehow someway...Thanx for all feedback again, still open for more so hollaback,

well to be honest 12's is realistic in an auto even without the suprastick... i also didnt know that NOS was better in auto's so +1 there fo me too... using Car-parts.com, you can probebly get 97% the 6spd parts for $1200-1500.. i just had a buddy giving me a price fo $900 for all the parts Originally Posted by SCI
