Same here. There is just no room for the weather strip even reduced thickness doesn't help. ????

then you maybe dont have the right kind of tape?,.. before i bought the right kind,.. i had some other tape that was the same size and black but a little more firm.. and it wouldnt fit,...just an idea..

 

the stuff i got is super thick that sucks i seen some real thin stuff at HD while i was there recently thatd prolly work but it mite just be more of a headache than what its worth

 

Frost King, 3/4" wide and a 1/2" deep. And it's the right kind of foam, too. The channels are 3/4", so the weather strip fit perfectly. But once in, the 1/2" foam thickness didn't allow for the window seal to go back on.

Hoursecor's ride is also a 2003, so it's not like there's a difference between our cars. I don't know, unless I read something brilliant and convincing here, I think I'm done.

Shift_Ice also has a fix for sunroof wind noise. I had it really bad, added some shims, and it helped a lot. It's not perfect but way better than it was.
Some notes: I bought 4 shims and used them all on the rear of the sunroof (2 each side). Also, they weren't 65 cents, they were $6 each!

Can't wait to get to the other noise fix. I want quiet!!! I keep finding myself wishing I had bought that Audi A6 in spite of the likely maintenance costs.

 

i did this 2 years ago, i remember I bought foam that was too thick at first so I went back and boguht some 1/2". That worked great, still no wind problems. I still have to do the sunroof fix next...

 

The sizes threw me off bigtime. I could not get the identical 3M tape and had to rummage through Wallworld and HD. Finally got the 1/2" thick x 3/4" wide. It measures 3/4 x 1/2 which is different from the 3M. Had to use logic...

Then I tried to put them on and bogged down....how do you take off the seal? Yank it out? How do you put it back? Where do they fit? Will they fit?

Maybe just whining....but pitch in for those who have done it!

 

I was expecting a soft rubber seal....and discovered a hard plastic type of seal, at least part of it was, and it wasn't happy at ALL about being dislodged from its happy home.

Or I was taking out the wrong piece, but i don't think so.
Was just taking it out for a looky-loo to see how it would go for when I get the tape....so far, not so good.

Insights?

 

That makes 4 of us here who are unhappy pursuing this little "fix".

I have no insights, Steve. But I sure would love to see exact photos from somewhere other than the write-up on shiftice.com, because that isn't working for me either.

 

Somehow it is not adding up. The seal does not look like it is just pull and re-place. It is sturdy and may be a one time use.

 

wanted to do this fix for a long time but the wind noise never bothered me that much. maybe will wait until we figure out the right size.

I have a 6-page copy of a revised version of the TSB (NTB01-029a), which shows more detailed information than the one linked above (NTB01-029). I'm considering going strictly by those instructions when I do mine (it looks like housecor's write-up leaves out a few details).

 

Can you possibly post this revised TSB?

For those having trouble, make sure you look closely at the pictures on the site and get it in the correct channel. I screwed up cause I didnt know where the right channel was and it didnt really fit right, but then I removed it and put some in the right place and

 

good post, i didn't know the moonroof is adjustable, that's one of my biggest problem since my moonroof doesn't flush with the panel.

 

The amended TSB is much detailed. Should work. However it did not state the specs of the foam.

 

Yes this is much better description, thanks! However, this is exactly what i tried to do with my windows and it didn't work (no room for the tape, even much thinner than 1/2 "). It makes me think our cars are already "corrected" by manufacturer (The mine is from Feb 2K2). The noise is still here though

If you did, how was it and did it work? What size of foam did you use?

 

Finally yanked the seal off the window and I can see a small foam already installed in the corner...looks like an attempt was made already. Did not work, there is wind noise, both sides in the rear.

I will attempt to rectify this shortly and will do a DIY with pics.

 

Reviewing the amended-updated TSB, it is pretty clear. I now know what to do. Will take detailed pics when I do it this week.

The specified 1/2" thick by 3/4" wide foam strip (from the shiftice DIY)might be too big for the TSB. At least from looking at where they want it installed.

I will go back to Wally or HD to get some 3/8" thick by 1/2" wide which from looking at the TSB is more of what they used.

I will be following the updated TSB rather than the shiftice DIY...

 

I did the TSB this weekend and it freeking worked! Followed the TSB to a T and solved the hiss coming from the rear windows. Did both. Bought the 3/8" foam from wallyworld.

 

The TSB is pretty clear...it will show you exactly what to do. Follow the directions andit willdo the job. Was going to take pics, but really not necessary. Just shove the foam as instructed. $4 repair.

 

Never heard of wallyworld ... is that another name for walmart So you got the 3/8" thick x 1/2" wide 3M foam strip? If you can, please take a picture of the product you bought since it will help alot of people on which size and type to buy.

Take a 4.5 inch strip and drop it in the slot, make sure the areas specified in the TSb are covered. You are all set. Some people went overboard and installed the strip all along the channel. Do not know if it helped. I just followed the TSB.
