Gauges acting funny

I've not seen this problem anywhere else.

while driving, after about an hour of stop and go traffic (1-1.5 hour commute each direction), my gauges will sometimes drop to zero. All of them, just like i turned the car off. the cluster remains fully lit, but the needles ar in the off position and the odometer is blank (and the trip odo subsequently resets) and then randomly comes back to normal after a few minutes. It has happened 4-5 times, 2 times on one trip.

I tried restarting to no avail.

Once this happened and the gauges went crazy. it said i was doing in excess of 80mph and whenever i slowed down, it would drop somewhat normally then rise quickly to 80+ again when i was obviously going much slower (i know the speed of traffic in my area based on lanes)

I recently replaced the alternator <2k miles ago and in the past have taken the cluster out a few times but i have driven the car at least 10k since the cluster was removed if not more.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
