Installed new ignition tumbler... car wont start! Help?

Okay so I just installed a new ignition tumbler... now the car wont start. I'm sure this is something to do with the immobilizer but can't figure it out. The new tumbler (used) came with a little black box that mounts on it which I assume has something to do with the immobilizer.

We tried using the old black box and the new one and it wont work either way... now we put the original pieces back in and the car starts fine.
With the new tumbler the car would turn over but not start...

Does anybody know if there is a procedure to learn the new key without taking it to the dealer? My Haynes manual basically just says it has to go to the dealer.

You might be able to find a locksmith who can do the reprogramming.
