I have mentioned on here that my A/C and Alternator belt is not on anymore. I have been driving without the belt on for awhile now but a family member mentioned that I shouldn't drive the car because the engine might blow up.
Is this true or can I still drive my car to work tomorrow?
If there isn't a belt on there, shouldn't I have a fix engine light? I don't have one

u can drive it but since that belt also drives the alternator it wont be long before ur battery is dead.
lol @ teh engine blowing up tell them to chill, thats if ur car had a timing belt which it doesnt and it wouldnt even run with out the timing belt period

its going to blow into a million peices. lol
thats kinda risky driving without a belt. cause ur car can die when u have misc items on such as lights, cd, defroster.

I got about 60 miles out of a new half-charged battery (whatever charge a new battery has from the parts store) and a dead alternator.
So it depends on what you mean by "drive to work."
And you should have a battery light on on your dash, but remember, it's just a bulb, so any of those could be burned out too. Does the battery light come on when you just turn on the ignition and the engine is off? If not, your bulb is burned out.

My recommendation, take the morning off and get a belt put on there. Shouldn't take long.

Why, is it difficult? It's the front belt. Much easier than the power steering.Originally Posted by Stereodude

I've done both. They both suck though the power steering one sucks much worse with all the nuts and bolts you almost can't get to with normal tools. Easy is a car where you pop the hood, stick a wrench on a spring loaded tensioner, pull it back take off the old belt and put a new one back on in 5 minutes and close the hood. Neither of the belts on the Maxima approach this level of easy.Originally Posted by Lontar1

Then, when your main belt's tensioner is rusted so badly that you can't turn it because of a horrific nut design (like an upright cup) that lets liquid pool in it and rust onto the threaded rod and it takes hours to finally get it to turn free. That's not easy...

I don't see how you can by pass the a/c compressor, I was looking in a hypotherotical situation if my compressor should seized up, and if i had to bypass it won't work unless i bought a bypass pulley in place of the compressor. I have seem some models you can't bypass it, but not sure it that's the case with the Maxima

That is how my V6 626 was. Changing belts was literally a 5 minute job. My Accord on the other hand, was a nightmare.Originally Posted by Stereodude
