2002 Bose Stereo

This question might have been asked before, but i'm asking again b/c i'm new and i could use a hand. I have a 2002 Max SE with the bose sound system, i want to put in a new head unit b/c of all the problems with the CD player and it just sucks. I've heard 2 different opinions, one is that i need a new amp with the HU, the other is that i don't. I wanted to hear anyone else's experience and see what they did. Any help is appreciated!

if you wanna use the bose amp, you need to get ones that have pre-amp output function. otherwise you need to rewire.

a pre-amp is that the signal gets amplified only by voltage but not the current.

a power-amp is to drive the speakers, which is a current amplifier.
because most power-amps have very low gain, due to trasistors design, you need higher voltage going into the power-amp which is the job for pre-amps.

the bose amp in your trunk is a power-amp, so you need a headunit that has preamp outputs.

lets see...
im running a dd kenwood 710ex indash. upgraded all speakers to mb quartz, including tweeters. and all of its powered internally from the kenwood deck.
NOTE: NO rewiring was done to each door at all. my "installer" by passed the bose amp to get power direct from the kenwood deck. and man it plays loud and clear!
questions? ask away. ill try to help.

The only thing I changed in my 2002 was the headunit (no amps or new speakers), to a Pioneer p3100dvd. I didn't even realize at the time about the preamp output so I guess I got lucky.

If the Bose HU is anything like the one in my old 626, putting in an aftermarket HU with the proper pre-amp outputs made a huge improvement in the sound. It was seriously night and day difference.

i looked up on crutchfield and they said that i would need this part to make everything work correctly

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_142C4NN...r.html?tp=3486

also, i've heard of the GXE kits or something that make the new aftermarket HU housing seem to match with the original, does anyone know where i can buy one and how much they are?

^^Yep, That'll do it. Or if your aftermarket HU has strong enough preout voltage, you can use a Metra 70-7551 instead, and save about $30.

The GXE kit can be found at Courtesyparts.com. It's about $135.
It looks like this:

I have a bunch of audio equipment for sale if you're interested. If you haven't gotten a HU yet, I think mine would suit you. I also have a GXE kit, and the pocket with door for sale. I can pre-wire everything for you. Details here:
http://forums.maxima.org/audio-video...nd-stereo.html

PM me if interested.

Also, lastly, this thread would have been answered a lot faster if it were posted in the Audio section.

It does. Every deck does. The question is if they're strong enough. I guarantee they're not.

(Is "reviving" old threads a no-no here?)

I'm having trouble finding any information on the stock Bose system and was really hoping you guys could direct me to some technical sheets or the like. I have an '02 with the seven speakers in Bose housing (implying the premium option, I'm assuming, though the dealer I bought it from didn't have it listed as an option) and a TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE Pioneer head-unit that belongs in some ricer's 1994 Civic. I'm really hoping the lady had it stolen or something, 'cause if she thought that was an improvement over a BOSE... Well, she needs some help.

My questions:
1. Did the stock/non-option audio have Bose speakers?
2. I was relieved to hear the system came with a proper amp. It's in the trunk? Any idea on its power rating?
3. Does the system have passive crossovers?
4. Are the speakers mounted above the dash dedicated tweeters?
5. How come I'm having trouble finding information on the setup?
6. Can you buy a new factory head unit? I'm definitely ripping out this Pioneer garbage as soon as I can to get something that doesn't anger me at night with its constant flipping between super-bright screen and the night-mode screen, as well as the ability to use my steering wheel controls and have the trip computer function.
7. What sort of reliability problems are people having with their Bose systems? I've read about CDs getting stuck and some mystical statements that the system "cuts out," randomly, in certain modes, but haven't really found anything on speaker life.
8. The six-disc changer would be in the trunk, I'm assuming? Was there a single-CD Bose option?

I'm going to take your questions and re-post them in another thread that we're using to discuss the Bose system, because the responses are better suited there.
