Caliper Slider service
Caliper Slider service
So a few week ago i took the max into midas because i kept smelling this burning aroma and hearing a noise. They show me that on the right side caliper engaged in the break position which sucked. So they fixed it but today i'm noticing all that over again. Do you any of what causes that?
Corrosion of the slide pins. Rust makes them sieze so after you apply the brakes they don't allow pads to free the rotor and car starts 'dragging brakes'.They have small boots and should be greased. The boot can be torn letting water in and if they didn't actually clean/re-grease it and replace the boot it's about time to come back - depending on the weather.
When I bought my 5th Gen 2.5 years ago I had both rear calipers replaced with remanufactured ones due to the smoking brakes etc just like the OP. And now currently 42k miles later those are now seizing up. Recently 1k miles ago I got the rear rotors and pads replaced. Now after 1k miles on the brand new rotors/pads I still am hearing contact. Looks like i need them to rework the caliper.
Anyone disagree?
And if so do literally ask them to perform a "Caliper Slider Service"?
To me it seems like a rebuild.. but with out the piston? And if I can remember right most shops around me dont like rebuilding calipers due to the liability.

Buy a caliper off a junk yard, cheaper and easier. My A32 had 240k and my sentra had 210k when I sold them, and still stock calipers. Very rarely should you need to buy new ones. Most brake shops are just trying to make more $$$$
P.S. my dad's 87' pathfinder has 440k on the stock calipers, no cracks or leaks they work great.

This is not a rebuild - all seals are left alone, you don't normally have to even take caliper off the car - so there's no bleeding either. I'd consider this part of normal brake service but as real life goes we're getting sh!tty service where they skip on cleaning/greasing the pins as part of it. Rear calipers can drag the brakes if those pins are stuck. I clean them myself at least once a year. It's a simple thing to do if you're inclined and have a place.
Honestly, I don't know how to get service out of the shops so I do it myself. Amount of crap I heard from them over years is unbelievable. My attitude to them is simple nowadays - if I don't like the service I just never come back and move on to the next one. This way I found more or less OK shop where I go for a few things which I can't handle myself - like LCA bushings pressing, wheel bearing replacement. IMHO it's all in the attitude - if a guy cares about what he is doing he'll make sure you're happy if not - you'll hear endless stories and excuses. The better ones tend to be reasonable in their prices too.

You have to have a trusted mechanic, preferably not from a chain.
well after coming from the shop i was wrong. The noise is because the wheel bearing needs to be replaced and the smell was because i now have an oil leak. Oil seal, front crankshaft seal and valve cover gaskets may need to be replaced

And all of that happened right after you serviced your brakes? You should change the shop instead IMHO. Cars normally don't fall apart like that.
well the bearing i knew that it was gonna have to be replaced soon which seems to be now before it gets any worst. the rest was unexpected and there is not to many shop options where i am but i found one that i'm gonna check out and im gonna ask around....
