Good Deal Turns Into A Wheel Project (pics)

So I had been looking for a set of rims that I could use for a winter setup because last year I realized Maxima + 20's + Snow = 0 traction (obviously I know). I found a good deal on some 18" SE-R type wheels with 6 tires so I jumped on the deal.

So there was good and bad news. The good news was the rims were in good shape not bent, no scuffs, no curb rash.

The bad news was that the rims were hideous because of a blood red stripe around the rim that was apparently spray painted on (pretty thick too) . Also the guy had lost the center caps and didn't tell me that the 6 tires should really only been 4 because the 2 on were bald, but that wasn't a big deal the color of the rims however were.

Time to get to work, luckily I got a buddy with access to a paint booth to help me out.

Original Wheel

Sanded down

Primer

3 Coats Black

Bake Booth @ 250 degrees

Those should go from "winter" to "year-round," dude. Ditch the 20's and put the money from them toward some nice mods.

I think you should have stuck with the primer color, maybe but a similar color paint on but that color looks great. Not bad in black either but too shiny for my taste

i think they need a chrome or silver lip and it would really set the rims off. would help break up the whole too much black thing.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Ya I'm gonna be blacking out the window trim and doing brakes at the end of the month, and I'm gonna sand down and spray the calipers too. Not sure what color yet though. Actually thinking of going on ebay today and grabbing a set of smoked front and rear markers.

As far as the 20's go, I expected people to chime in and say to ditch them because people seem to love to hate on rims that didn't come off another OEM car for some reason. I will however be changing them before they go back on this summer with a new design with some powder coating and some new rubber but definitely not getting rid of them.

I like that I can change the look of the car if I want. I like the 20's, I like the 18's.....Just like everyone loves to quote on here though " that's just my 2 cents "...

Oh, there's nothing wrong with 20's. I've just never been a huge fan of the weight gain usually associated with them. And chrome...

The right set of 20's can look downright sexy on a Max, it just depends what kind. But either way, to each their own.

If you like them... I used to think black was the "coolest thing" till I realize you can't see any detail in the rim or usually even make out what kinda rim it is especially at night.. But hey, if you like them. Defintely clean job on the paint

Gloss black isn't my thing, but that looks like a good paint/refinish job. I kinda liked the silver look when you had them sanded down. Hope that finish is holding up.

Ya the wheels had to be painted because that red stripe was awful and looked like the previous owner cheaped out and used thick coats of spray paint. But the paint is holding up just fine since the wheels were sanded and a good coat of primer was applied for the paint to stick to. The wheels actually looked good at a few different stages when I getting them ready for paint and it was tough to decide what I wanted to stick with because they looked good when they were flat black too.

Overall though I like the gloss black look because the glassy look to them shows off the wheels detail better than just flat black. I'm glad I got around to doing this though because now I'm coming up with some ideas to change the summer setup with the 20's to add some black detail to them. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

That Black/Black look is popular with the Amish and Mennonites.

Personally I like some contrast, but it looks stealthy.

You did a great job, and i think the end result looks awesome. I've always liked black on black color schemes. The wheels remind me a lot of stock Acura TL Type-S rims.

Great job on the painting. The wheels turned out great. I have to respectfully say though I'm not a fan of black wheels on most cars, especially older sedans. They look like the minivans or old Accords I see driving around with the plastic wheel covers off. I like some contrast. Take a silver Jeep Wrangler and put black wheels on it and the results are great.

Just my 2 cents though and if you like it that's all that matters.

PS, esubliminal, I still think your wheels are the nicest I've seen on any 5th gen. If I had the extra money I'd definitely get a set of those for mine.
