How to: True Cold Air Intake From Altima

Alright so I thought I read somewhere on the forums thats its possible to use a cold air intake off of an altima on our 5th gens with a little bit of work...

Its true, it works.

Needed:

02-06 V6 Altima Cold Air Intake Kit off of ebay:
$60 shipped for a good one.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-06...ht_3733wt_1167

New Filter, your choice, I used a K&N

Another coupler, I got on from autozone for $10

3'' Hole Cutter

Drill

Some Tape, I used it around the intake, around the hole.

Battery will need to be moved or relocated as a hole will be drilled.
I moved my battery to the trunk.
Hole needs to be drilled around the hole that is already there.

Will look like this:

The tube will need to be cut slightly, and somewhat on an angle... Cut and measure

So put it all together and it will look like this:

Filter fits right in-front of the front wheel.

Any questions, just ask. Thanks

Excellent DIY. How did you wire your battery? You said it was relocated in the trunk. Isn't that a lot of resistance, very long wires? What gage did you end up using?

Long wires, I used 0 gauge Positive all the way to the front and a 0 gauge negative to the frame. And another smaller ground to the engine.

No problems starting even in the coldest conditions.

MAF and large breather hose connected, smaller breather hoses have a small autozone cone one them.. Everything works great, preforms nicely and looks good.

Wanted to say that after a 3 1/2 hour drive everything is working great. Nothing out of the ordinary, it fit in really well with no movement back and forth. One of my favorite mods currently.

I used my 0 Gauge Stinger audio cables out of my old subwoofer system (4 12's, then 2 15's).. Then I added another ground straight to the engine.

Will the 4th gen CAI have the same routing as the his modified Altima CAI?

Edit: couldn't find a good 4th gen CAI (installed) pictured.

Hopefully you dont get into any hydrolock issues like alot of the 6th gen guys are having with the Fujita.

Our filter sits in front of the wheel too...

Great writeup.

One question. Any worries about driving through deep puddles. Especially at speed.

I'm just worried about sucking up some water. From what I hear even a small amount can toast my expensive MAF. We all know what a bunch of water in the intake will do.

Thanks.

You could get this instead of the coupler:

i hit a slush puddle on the highway last year and it took a big gulp.pretty much started to chug and shut down....i pulled over and turned it off for a min, turned it back on and finished my trip (i have since changed all the fluid) no major problems.but i have since wanted to change to short ram....in the winter atleast.i dont have tru-cold air mod...mine sits right behind the splashguard under the bumper

From what I have read, its hard to unless your are submerging the cone and driving quickly with more throttle...

With the altima CAI you can cut it how far you want it down. I have mine by the splash shield but there is a good amount of room to cut.

I used a hack saw...

Maybe ... the OP does have a 2000, and Orgullo has an 02+.

You can do this instead. Remove battery tray, turn it 180 degrees, re-drill mounting holes and this is what I ended up with...

...if I ever decide to do a true CAI. I am now back to this...

...low end torque seemed to suffer massively with the longer tubing.

I'm not sure who I "borrowed" the idea from.

But I do recall Orgullo turned the battery 90 degrees and went through a bunch of modifications, grinding, cutting, etc.

My way moved the battery closer to the engine within 15 mins of time...

...oh well.

i also noticed a substantial low end loss with the longer Pipe. I installed a cattman right in front of the tire and ended up taking it off and installing the filter just after the MAF.

Nice write up.

Good observations to refer back to should people get the itch to convert their SRI to cold-air setup. Personally, I don't want to bring my filter closer to the colder air... I want to bring colder air closer to my filter.

How do we do that?

Using a pick axe you create speed holes in the hood.

Yes, water holes... I mean, speed holes.

Short of putting an offset air-scoop on the hood, I'm at a loss as well. I know someone here was convinced they didn't need their left, plastic under-panel, but that doesn't seem a valid option for rain & snow. And I remember a thread where someone crafted a very elaborate front-air scoop using the OEM collector. Except, without negative pressure, that little slit under the hood is pretty much useless, IMO.

It would have to be some kind of under-hood scoop directed to the SRI filter, and accounting somehow for road spray. You know, something insanely elaborate, to justify barely measurable gain, if at all.

All this over 1-2 horsepower and low end loss? Jesus.
