Changing out Oil Pan Gasket?

has anyone ever changed out their gasket on the lower oil pan? my FSM says that there is some special tool to remove the lower oil pan. i am trying to find if someone has done this without the tool or if they had to purchase the tool to change out their lower oil pan gasket.

The "special tool" is just a seal cutter, because you have to break the bond between the upper and lower pan.

RTV is used as a gasket.

Just did mine today I bought a gasket and used silicone came out great also cleaned that small filter thing that hangs down came out great just used rachet to get bolts off and a scraper to get oilpan off the engine and then cleaned oiff the old silicone and put it all back together with new gasket since car didn't have one previously think that mightve been reason for my oil leak...

Who the heck is supplying oil pan "gaskets" for the Maxi anyway? There ain't no stinkin gasket (for either the lower or upper oil pan)......just good old high strength RTV is used, per the FSM.

fel-pro oil pan gasket are a waste! RTV is the way to go.
Mitsu pans are known to leak. Clean all surface properly, apply a small bead of RTV, re-install and say good bye to wet oil pans.

^ What he said. FSM says only RTV is needed. I've read about some people having problems using the aftermarket gasket & RTV at the same time. I've been 100% fine with just RTV.

I used a little bit too thick of a bead which required some cleanup after mashing it on the upper pan, but have had no problems since (which was 5 months ago).

The Nissan dealer has a gasket for your oil pan. If you have any rust or leaking I would replace the pan while you're at it.

You can use a pry bar to get the pan off, just be gentle so you dont damage the aluminium part of the engine you are prying off.

I would definitely use a gasket instead of RTV... Nissan uses just the RTV and there are a ton of people with leaking and rust because of this. Use a gasket and seal it nicely with some RTV and the problem should be solved.

ok thanks for the help. i got it done i already had a gasket for the lower oil pan. when i took the oil pan off it also had a gasket on there with no RTV. It kind of looked like it had RTV on it at one point. The gasket had a gash in it at one spot. I assume the person who owned the car before me did this and did a crappy job of it.

i've done oil pans both with rtv and a gasket and i think the problem is torque specs, some people will use the german gudentite ( good and tight ) method and not torque properly thus resultign in oil leaks.

there is a reason why manufacturers use torque specs and too companies sell toque wrenches, to do the job right ONCE.

as soon as my oil pans leak ( and they will ) i will use the FSM to the T

Has anyone installed a higher-capacity oil pan from Stillen, APS, etc.? (sold for a 350Z)

http://www.airpowersystems.com/350z/sump/sump.htm

This might be too large, but I think the Stillen one would fit.
