I have to agree on perhaps the alternator or a pully bearing as it increases in pitch as you increase the throttle, and your correct the oil change will do little to quiet it down. I would have the alternator checked or the pulleys that the belt rides on.

to add to this if you take some WD-40 you could spray the bearings in there one at a time when its running to slowly eliminate which one it is.

just say in. but yeah you have a pully going out. a way to tell if the belt is too loose or tight find a spot(car turnned off) where you can push the belt and if it slacks 1/2 or so then you should be fine on how tight the belt is.

run to your local auto parts store and ask them to check it your alternator

ya the was the plan fr thursday, my day off, i love this car and have waited 5 years to get it, and i cant let it go like this, is it possible that the idle tensioner is going bad? causing it to wear the belt out? they were all replaced 2 years ago at 170,000 or so miles, and the tensionor is a little rusty

ps. i also can see where you would tighten it up that makes contact with the belt it wobles a wee little, anything worth looking into?

so if the bearing in the alternator is going bad, will it still charge the battery?

Before you start replacing tha alternator, remove the belt and spin all the pulleys by hand. It could also be the idler pulley.

+1 on alternator. I had the exact same noise and almost the same miles as yours I am at 186K on my 01 GLE.

Take the Alternator, AC compressor belt off and start the car and you will notice the noise goes away.

It is a bearing in the alternator that causes this noise. You alternator may still be working fine. My alternator made this noise for 3 yrs and I lived with it. It was only recently I drove an i30 and found out the noise should not be there LOL.

It should take you but 15min to get the alternator belt off and test this out.

I replaced the alternator since I could not find a shop to replace the bearing.

Good Luck.

Been there, done that. The idler pulley when bad makes a loud grinding sound compared to the whine of the alternator.

I have replaced both so now I know how each is different in acoustics LOL

I dreaded the timing chain too. However a chat with DaveB and a couple of local Nissan Techs... the timing chain issue is on the VQ35s... we VQ30DE-K folks have less HP but less problems to worry about

hmm... search the 5th gen forum... i think in the last few weeks we now have the definitive bible to do your alternator. It was a thread started by Colonel... with additions by Mandyfig, Homeyclaus and myself. There are steps, pics... info on tools needed best practices... anything we came across.

Good Luck.. with the right tools it should take you about 3 hours.

Well you have more courage than I had to defy the cold, my alternator went about a week ago and I had my mechanic do the dirty work as I have no garage ... Hopefully this will change soon as I just purchased a new home and it has one hell of a nice garage with enough parking in the driveway for several cars. Glad to hear all is well now for you.

A bad alternator can kill a battery over time. Especially if it's an older battery.
