Okay guys.. this is serious- i really need some help/advice--ill keep this short

I had my car in a nissan dealer in this past september,.. got a new new tranny put in under my nissan warrenty, due to 3rd and 6th gear problems..everything went well..

I have been getting a random call on my phone for the past month and havnt picked up.. well today i did.. heres where it gets good..

after introductions--They said "this is going to sound weird, but the manager here wants to buy your car off you and is willing to pay top dollar,..to which I responded,.."well, idk i still own about 3-4 grand on the car and the KBB is prob less then 10G so that wont leave me with much money to cover my loan and buy something else"

to which she kinda laughed off, and said "welli thats KBB, which is no where near what we are willing to pay". ,.. and so.. I said sure and made an appointment for tomorrow @ 2.

okay.. seriously WTF is this about? and what should i do?,.. and how much money could i expect?

i was thinking a few things..

1. they messed something up BAD and need that car in so something doest go wrong.. lawsuit?

2. they have a buyer who is willing to shell out major $

3. he really wants a low mile 5.5 (41K orig- new tranny w 3K)

EDIT: someone else just called me back to confirm my appointment 20 mins later..

please guys,.. this is 100% serious.. any advice?

It's normal, car sales rope-a-dope. I've grown to enjoy that crap as I get older, and never feel defensive around car salespeople anymore. In fact, it's kind of fun when you know more about a car than they do. Based on that, go have fun with it and see what happens.

On the other hand...

...you sound kind of freaked out, which is not the proper state of mind in which to discuss any transaction with an experienced salesperson. Something to consider. If I knew you better, I'd probably say stay home.

See how much they are willing to pay and go from there... Make sure there is no fine print or anything.. If they offer enough than what the car is worth to you then go for it and buy something else.. Think about a different car you would want and do some research for another car if you only own one.
Good luck

Sounds like advertisement scheme to make you go back to the lot and pick a new car. I get letters regarding buyback from the Nissan dealership(s) that I went to get my car serviced (oil change) lol.

They got tired of spending money sending out those bait and switch letters to you, so now they call in an attempt to lure you into getting a new car from them.... I get those kind of letters all the time; it's nothing new. If you have nothing to lose but time, find out for yourself. Or, as Rochester suggested, with your state of mind you could become gullible in the hands of people with strong convincing power.

Standard sales tactic. You just sent your car in for some major work likely at a substantial cost. They try to capitalize on it by calling you in saying they need your car and want to pay $$ for it in the hopes that you are now scared of your car and will want something newer.

This is why I HATE dealerships. No, I've never been had by one of these tactics. I just see them as dishonest.

come to think of it the stealership has called my mom wanting to buy her 95 toyota camry with 200k miles on it saying that they are in high demand... Its funny because the car isnt worth much with a huge dented rear door, non working front windows, it needs new front axles, ball joints, valve cover, ect.. Its on its last leg.. My mom went there, they offered $500 cash toward a new toyota... Hmmmm

btw, shes looking into a infinity g37 coupe all wheel drive or altima coupe

This recently happened to my sister with her pathfinder. I guess they gave her a good deal b/c she walked out with a low mileage loaded altima (2007, i think) and her payment is 100 less a month, she saves about 100 month in gas and her insurance went down too...it could be a good thing.

I just wouldnt settle for anything, a good deal is nice but you may end up missing your max when (hypothetically) it's gone...

+1. QFT. Definitely think everything through before you decide on something. I can't tell you how many people sold their Maximas and either regret it or really, really miss it..

Typical dealer sales tactic.

They do this anytime they see a nice used car in good condition. Moreso, if it has low miles.

A lot of people don't know what there car is worth and will unload it to the dealer. The dealer can then turn around and sell it for a good profit.

Every manufacturer does this. Its a dealer tactic.

Go in and see what they have to say, I wouldnt commit to anything. Your car with those low miles and new tranny is probably worth close to 9k being a GLE? If there is nothing wrong with your car I dont see why you'd want to trade it in for anything. Your max is sweet man!

Everyone gets those letters with checks with $xxxx money/calls to just be in the dealership. Sometimes they cold call owners if big wigs are in town and they need to "look" busy.

See what they have to say, dont commit to anything bro. Good luck and have fun anyhow. Test drive the 370z, their on your time anyways.

I read about one sentence of the entire thread, but...

this is a normal ploy for a dealership to get you to buy another, higher margin vehicle.

Hey, not for anything, but it's a 6SP afterall. Then again, we'll never know it was a scam or not unless you check it out (which leads me to think scam anyway).

Hope for the best...expect the worst

Good point. That's another psych tactic, leaving you to sit and wonder how much they think your car is worth, when the fact is they already know and don't give a crap. Sales is sales, whether it's cars or houses or vacuum cleaners. A good salesperson will own you unless you've got the experience to properly manage the situation. Heck, even then...

There you go! That's what you should get out of this, a memorable test-drive experience. The 370 is a fun little whip. Drive the 6MT with rev-matching. That's a blast!

Seriously, you owe only a few grand less than the car is worth, you've got mods waiting in the wings that you're going to thoroughly enjoy, and you already love your ride. Keep your car, enjoy it, pay it off, save your money.

good point about the keys-.. im taking it one step further,.. im thinking about taking another car down there.. they said they saw the car and want it.. so i see no point to have it there,.. if they ask ill say its garaged for the winter if something were to go down i could always get the car on another appointment..so.. well see how they respond to that.. and then yeah.. ill let you know how i feel about the test drive of a 370 tomorrow lol

True. The 370z is more akin to putting on a suit of armor. With about as much visibility as a tin helmet.

Fun to drive, though? Oh yeah. Absolutely. But not a daily driver for these old bones.

Dealers and salesmen are becoming more desperate, thus reaching out to anyone and everyone. This includes anyone that has a phone number attached to the dealer.

You are not special, your car is not special...they just want to suck you into the dealer in hopes of selling you a new car.

damn...am I the only one who has never heard of this tactic? I guess it must be true from what I'm reading then.

OP, all I can say is, DO NOT drive the 370z because I guarantee you that you wont wanna drive your max again...haha, but its true

Dealerships cant sell new cars right now for anything. So what else can they sell? Used Cars. They just want to build up their used car inventory because thats all that is selling right now.

I got one in the mail too. Specifically had a picture my make and model that said they will pay "15% more than its acutal value" etc.

well the OP has 41k or something like that so im sure the same as he gets.

hey I know something you havent read yet OP its a dealer tactic....jk

dude just know that your not gunna sell them your car. keep that in mind and then you will keep control of the situation. remember they want it and you are the one who had the choice of selling it. so no matter what they say you ultimately have the final word.

drive a 370Z.....DO IT I wish I could but im a little young for them to believe me.

I've made plenty of those calls myself in the last 6 years selling cars. The whole idea is to get someone in the door. Usually it doesn't work but when you're sitting there with no customers it's better than nothing. Once you're in the door it'll be just like you came in on your own. Don't expect anything special.
