How can I tell if my 02 Maxima came with HLSD? Did this generation even have that option? I see many people talking about 6th gen hlsd swaps. Just wondering. Thanks

The most obvious sign is the pedals. Hlsd cars came with metal-looking pedals. Although a definite answer lies on the firewall stamp. If your tranaxle code ends with an H you have hlsd, if it ends in an "A" then, you do not. Simple as that.

Pop the hood and take a look at the silver VIN plate near the windshield.

If the trans-axle code ends in an "A" then it is an open diff. If it ends in "H" it has HLSD (Like me )

This, with 80% probability. But some people (Like me ) install those pedals anyway.

This, with 90% probability. But the tranny may have failed, been replaced and down-graded.

It's winter. Get on the snow, gun it, and see what happens.
This, with 100% certainty. Trust your butt.

I got stuck going up my driveway during a snow storm and I was basically idling with the wheels spinning in 1st gear. I got out of the car and saw both of my wheels spinning.

I guess that means that it is HLSD?

Because I've seen cars with open diffs spin both wheels in the snow...

IDK, Unkle Joe. I just wanted to point out that lots of non-LSD owners install those pretty pedals. And it was an opportunity to say, "Trust your butt." Wise words, IIDSSMS.

Nice. That's a good feeling, to discover something positive about your car after the fact.

Ba-dump, bump! Good one.

Here's a thought provoking question: why would an Arizona Maxima have HLSD? Unless the car is a transplant, the original owner checked off that $400 option because he wanted the HLSD for spirited driving. Now, you've no way to know he drove the car hard; hard in the way most others wouldn't...

...but I would have.

Carfax shows that this car only recently found its way to Arizona. Original owner purchased it in Nevada, second owner moved to Utah then after that it went to Arizona after being bought at an auction.

I still don't know if he drove the car hard, but the handling of the car still feels pretty good. Wheels could probably use a balance, other than that everything seems good.

Anyway nice catch on that, I wouldn't have thought about that unless you brought that up hehe.

Talk about discovering something nice about a car after the fact...

I bought my car off Craigslist two years ago at the age of 17 and I knew nothing about Maximas.

I typed in "6 Speed" and my car was the first thing that came up. LOL

The more I read about my car, the more I realized that it is actually quite "rare". (Black on Black 6 speed meridian with HLSD)

P.S, Check your oil level every so often, some 5.5gens tend to burn oil. No biggie, just wouldn't want to be riding around with no oil
