insurance needed?
Hey i have a question times are very hard for me right now and the max needs alot of work tires, oil leak and a few other things. i'm about to be done paying it off before the year is over but my insurance is to high even after changing companies. Does anyone know if you are required to have insurance on a vehicle you are still making payments on?

however.......the finance company can legally force place full coverage on your car even if you don't want to.
so next time you get your car note in the mail to make your normal monthly payment, you may see it jump an xtra $90-$150 and there is nothing you can do. it's their car and if they feel the need to place insurance on their property , they may do so at your expense.
What type of insurance is required to purchase and maintain a Florida license plate and registration? Florida's minimum coverage is $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) as long as you have a valid Florida license plate.
What if I fail to keep insurance on my vehicle that I have registered in Florida?
The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is authorized to suspend your driving privilege, including your vehicle license plate and registration, for up to three years or until proof of Florida insurance is provided, whichever is first.

When you're done paying it off, You can just get liability. The finance companies require you to have full coverage. Just make sure you don't crash, let them crash you! (and hope they are insured) You don't want to be placed in my situation. I have liability on my car (im 19 and full coverage will cost me both arms and legs) I rear ended somebody *sudden traffic stop* My insurance covers his damages but I'm stuck with fixing my own car. Luckily the hit was not too bad. But good luck!

Always get full coverage as KBCobra points out, if you have the liability insurance only you end up being stuck with collision damage and then having to pay to get the damage repaired yourself.
I made that mistake in 2007 after starting a new job... Only had funds for day to day junk and not insurance. Well, what would you know I got into an accident and my maxima STILL has the scars from 2007.

ANY car that has a lien(loan) on it is REQUIRED to have collision and comp on it,you think your insurance is high??? i pay 229 a month for full coverage on mine...I tried screwing the lien holder once before on another vehicle i had and opened the policy with full coverage then 2 months later dropped to liability...that didnt work to well for me as the insurance company typically reports to the lienholder of any changes in the policy, once my lienholder found out they told me i had 5 days to get full coverage or they were going to reposess the car from me.....so just try figureing out another way of cutting costs to afford insurance...
Full coverage for me would be $350 a month. No tickets and this was before my accident, so ever since, I'm pretty sure it is now higher. That is why I am sticking with Liability and I run the risk of screwing myself over again. Until I turn 21, I will stick with liability. Hopefully I can come up on a 5.5 6 speed by then
Just keep looking for other insurance companies and you can even try to lowball them. Call up one and say you can get full coverage from X company for (some number that is lower than what you pay now) and see if they can match it.
wow alot of responses...well the car has parked\garaged sort speak cause of issues with it. After reading over the responses looks like i would have to keep insurance on it. I wasnt required to have full coverage on it from the lien holder so i got the state minimum requirements which for me is around $238 which is down from $327 i was paying with another company( oh yes i just turned 25 in December and i have clean record) . It's kinda an uneasy feeling known that they can repo the car cause it doesnt have insurance but i guess its a business thing protecting there invest or whatever. ill try to see what i can do and keep that from happening, the thing i wish i would have did was use that insurance money to fix the damage when that girl hit it cause if it did come down to that whole repo crap that $$$ that went down the drain to fix their crap

I guess what I'm trying to say is, talk to a lot of people and don't give up looking around. Prior to finding this company I couldn't find anything less than 230 for liability and probably 300 to 500 for full coverage a month. fyi, the company I am with is called oasis insurance. Only good for Arizona, but that should give you an idea of what kind of company it is.
People had good results using www.esurance.com for a quote. I'd check there. I'm with Progressive in the state of Washington and I'm at $150 monthly for full coverage, including road side assistance and towing to a repair shop (15 miles).
Well the real reason that it went down was that i moved. I changed companies but it was a big difference really until i relocated 300+ miles away. btw i'm with progressive now but i will look into esurance
In florida it is THE LAW to have insurance in your car.. so dont risk it, you wil go to jail if you dont have insurance.. Call the DMV and you will confirm.. Trust me I did already...
i've accumulated them in the past 6 years and i just got my license back last year after a mandatory 2 year suspension.
i still drove though, but i had bought a nice little lexus with BOTH front and rear license plates, no tint on the windows, and just drove the speed limit for the time that my license was suspended.
i don't condone that type of behavior, but i really needed to get back and forth to work and to school to finish up my degree.

You can ask the DMV grant you a provisional license only to travel to work/school and home. Then just go as you please, cruise control for 55 and only look straight ahead
I tell you the hardest thing I ever done was drive 'normal' for the week once I got my license back from the 30 day suspension. All it took was some beater civic passing me to put the lead back into my right foot.

iim sorry bud,but if you went to jail it wasnt because of insurance. hell,i currently have 13 points on my record . everything ranging from speed contest to driving on a suspended license. and i live in socal , home to some of the meanest and most unforgiving police u can meet .lucky for me i dont have priors or id be sharing a jail cell with you.

You're in cali, he's in Florida. They have different laws.
Here in VA you can get away without having any insurance, as long as you pay the $500 fee. I don't know what happens if you end up getting in an accident, but I guess it would turn to lawsuits?
Insurance Requirements
To purchase license plates or decals, you must certify that the vehicle is covered by the minimum insurance requirements or pay the uninsured motor vehicle fee. Insurance requirements also apply to antique motor vehicles. Your insurance carrier must be authorized to conduct business in Virginia. Virginia requires the following minimum coverage:
- Bodily injury/death of one person $25,000
- Bodily injury/death of two or more persons $50,000
- Property damage $20,000
Self-insurance or Surety Bonds are special options for owners of business vehicles. Details are available at any DMV office.
Consequences for vehicle owners who are uninsured or have not paid the UMV fee will have their driving and vehicle registration privileges suspended. To be reinstated, they must pay a $500 statutory fee, file a Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate (SR-22) with DMV for three years, and pays a reinstatement fee, if applicable.
Best thing to do is check the Florida DMV for insurance requirements:

I am registering a vehicle for the first time in Florida. Is automobile insurance mandatory?
Yes. If you own a vehicle with at least four wheels and are registering it, you must have Florida insurance.
I live outside Florida for six months a year. When not in Florida, my vehicle is in storage and not used. Must I maintain automobile insurance?
Yes. Any vehicle holding a valid Florida license plate and registration must be covered by a Florida insurance policy throughout the entire registration period. When you leave Florida, you may surrender your license plate and registration at the nearest driver license or Tax Collector office to avoid maintaining your policy. You can always register your vehicle upon your return to Florida, at which time you can provide proof of Florida insurance.
I own multiple vehicles. Some are not used for different reasons, but the county I live in requires that the vehicles remain registered. Must I maintain insurance coverage on these vehicles?
Yes. Insurance coverage must be maintained throughout the entire vehicle registration period, whether the vehicle is used or not.

Man, I really feel for you guys and the insurance rates. I barely pay $200/month for 4 vehicles. Then again, I'm much older than you guys!
Still, even when I got my first car (Altima) and my own insurance I wasn't paying that much....and that was with a couple of speeding tickets and a totaled car! Geico and the lizard FTW!
The best thing to do is shop around. One good technique is use your relative's agents, etc. to get you a better quote.
At the end of the day, it is about AGE and driving record, plus your credit score.
In short, you need luck.
Here ya go....Good luck!

There you go a capital idea. Get parents or someone in your family to add you. It might make their insurance drop a little and if you offer to pay a tiny bit of their insurance... Everyone wins.
