Clutch Question?

was driving last night and this weird rubbing/whinning noise appeared. so today i get off work then all the sudden i was in 2nd gear I heard this pop and then some grinding. Car would not go anywhere. engine would rev but no more movement, It was like i was in neutral. Then this burnt smell. My question is. Is this just my clutch that has gone completely out or could it be something worse, like having to replace the whole tranny? Had to get the car towed to my buddy's dad's shop tonight. He said he would check it out tomorrow, just wondering if anyone knows anything about my situation.

Sounds like a clutch failure, but you may need a new flywheel if it got marred up too much.

yup, check for galling or hot spots on the flywheel. it may need to be replaced as well.

update, so I got my clutch replaced with a stage one, but mechanic showed me what was really happening. Turns out that there was a bracket that held my passenger side axle to the engine block that completely snapped in half, causing my axle to slip out of the tranny causing me not to go anywhere. but got my car back today and still have the weird humming/rubbing noise. what can this be. could my axles be going bad??? HELP and also isn't a stage one suppose to be stiffer on the pedal? because mine feels lighter on the pedal now.
