redline gear oil

Been reading a few threads about replacing an axle seal and what kind of gear oil to use. A lot of people on the forums seem to like Redline MT-90 so I went out and bought 3 quarts for my 5.5gen. I later found out that the gear has to be made for GL-4.

I trust the advice on the forums but the bottle is saying it's recommended for GL-5 and GL-6. It doesn't really mention GL-4. Here are some pictures of my bottle for reference. I just wanted to confirm that I had the right stuff and that it is safe before I pour 50 dollars worth of gear oil into my car. Thanks!

OP, Feldman has the correct one. I changed mine the past weekend. You only need 3 bottles. Don't really feel the differences after changing it though...

what did you have in there before? The biggest difference i saw when i changed mine was when it was really cold out it wasn't hard to shift until the car warmed up like before

I went back today and swapped out the gear oil... apparently I didn't look hard enough because the mt-90 was right below the other stuff.

OP, thats the one I bought, how much did you pay per bottle?

Feldman - well, I bought my car used @ 82K miles. Right now its @ 92K miles. I have no idea what tranny fluid was inside before, when I changed it, the color is green though.

I still get hard shift on 2nd sometime in cold water. But I think its getting better (hopefully).

It was about 13 dollars a bottle, so I'm really glad I confirmed before assuming I had the right stuff. At least our transmissions only need roughly 2.5 Quarts

Putting the same stuff in my car tomorrow. Considered Amsoil but its more pricey than this stuff, and apparently no better.

i paid about $11.50 for mine but the 5.0 gens take 4.4 quarts instead of just under 3

Green fluid doesnt sound good hahah

I dont know what was in my tranny before i made the switch but it was hard for me to shift into any gear if the temp was below 20° until the fluid warmed up and now it feels just about the same no mater what the temp is

$13 a bottle?? Thats kinda expensive but I guess it local store. I got mine $11.25 shipped. Have fun changing it, it took me a while because of the small funnel I used.

Just got my axle leak fixed and I have to say, this redline gear oil makes a world of a difference. My car shifts almost like new. Goes into gear like butter... I'm guessing it's a combination of the redline gear oil and the fact that the tranny was probably lower than it should have been from the leak. Thanks again for all your help! =)

Pro tip: Soak the bottles in hot water. Then it goes down like water

I changed mine when it was in the 30s or 40s. There was no way in hell I was standing there for an hour.
