How do you remove this piece...

I want to paint just the section behind the license plate black. Is there a way to take that piece off or am I going to just have to tape around it and paint it while it's on the car.

The trim panel comes off - from inside the trunk - you'll have to remove the inside trim to get to it.
The gray on the area around your license plate is the actual trunk lid of your car - so you'll need to paint it the same as painting the car -

and to the OP.. you couild always remove the trunk to eliminate any chance of overspray..
