Replace the water pump :P (joke)

Like honestly, I've not really heard of internal engine problems with the VQ30.

I don't believe that car would have a bad HG only 10 years old. WTF?

Wife's Neon did that. I flushed the radiator, put in clean water, and drove it straight to the dealership for a trade-in...never looked back.

That was a neon of course...not worth anything to either of us.

when was the last time anyone heard of a headgasket going bad on a VQ30?

was the coolant neglected or was it running and overheated?

The puff of smoke upon start up could be valve guides leaking a slight amout of oil into the combustion chamber. It burns off immediately upon start up.

If the head gasket failed at the combustion chamber seal there would be white smoke all the time coming from your exhaust and you'd probably have an overheating issue as combustion chamber gasses would be pumped into your cooling system. (not oil)

If it's failed at an oil galley passage, the antifreeze usually winds up in the oil, not the other way around as you describe.

I think you need to reasses your concern.
