5.5 gen BOSE AUX input

this is a short how-to on how to add AUX input to your stock BOSE headunit in 5.5gen maxima, might work on I35 but i have never seen the headunit myself so i cannot speculate.

I wana say from the beginning that i take no responsibility if you break something or injure yourself, so do this at your own risk.

Lets start.

1. Remove the radio, here is a how-to, not made by me.
http://www.shiftice.com/Maxima_02-03...dio_repair.pdf
2. Now you have 2 options.
--- I. Because those screws holding the mounting bracket are really hard to take off the first time i found a way to solder the cable without taking them off, but it requires one more person to help hold the metal cover while you get in with soldering iron and do what you gotta do.
---II. If you can loosen those screws go ahead and take it all apart. instructions above and below.

---I. If you decide to take the short route here is what you have to do.

The metal "wire" connects to the ground and red and black can go either way right or left channel, does not matter unless you listen to your music on one side of the car

Before you solder it, you might need to run the cut piece of the cord throught this hole in the cover because in my case it was too big too fit.
here how i secured it to the HU

continues in post 2.....

If you wana go the long route, its less frustrating and longer, but you do have to struggle with the crews(we know which ones i'm talking about).

http://www.shiftice.com/Maxima_02-03...dio_repair.pdf
you gonna do everything in this pdf through page 6 and get to here

Circled in blue is the connector you need to work with.

Do it like this. Before you solder it, you might need to run the cut piece of the cord through the hole in the cover because in my case it was too big too fit.

REASSEMBLE IN REVERSE ORDER

"to finally make it work you will need to use a screwdriver to "push the tape in" or use old tape without any tape in it, because if there is no tape you wont be able to switch that channel on"

I take no responsibility if you mess something up, do this at your own risk.
pictures taken from the pdf at shiftice.com, thanks

Wow nice write up man, I think I am going to give this a try on my maxima soon. Quick question, I have the bose but mine is a bit different because I have the nav system. Do you think it will be a similar layout if I pull out the single din unit with the tape player in it?

i have no idea, but the tape playing mechanism in regular BOSE seems to be pretty universal so they might have used it there too.

So happy you figured this out. I actually had the skipping bose radio and hit the headunit causing the screen to go black. now that I can do this I don't care as I will control everthing with my IPOD.!!!

you are the man.

LOL same thing happened to my first maxima, i whacked it on the way to school one morning cuz it was pissing me off and it slowly faded away.
so i got myself aftermarket one, but nothing looks as good as stock one so i decided to find a way to add aux.

in order to secure the connector there i used gorilla glue, which was not smart because it expands like crazy and i had scratch it off the connector, so dont use gorilla glue for this.
i used connectors to squeeze it together after i drilled a hole and put glue on it.

Maybe some JB weld will do the trick... guess I should get it working before I start thinking about cord placement.

For anyone wondering with navigation system it is not the same. It may be possible, but I wasn't able to find something that resembled Left Right and GND like his setup did. Guess I'll just go buy a cassette adapter for now.

Hi, do you think the tape head will make some background noise, would it be a good idea to disconnect it if I dont plan to use the tape deck?

i thought about it, and there is barely any noise coming from it, you can only hear it if you max volume and nothing is playing

Wonderful! Now I can do away with this stupid, primitive looking tape-deck converter for my Zune. Nicely done man!

Awesome write up. How did you get the female end to sit so secure and flush in the coinholder?

drilled the hole just big enough for the metal part to go in and then used a knife to fit it in flush

Just did this yesterday. It sounds awesome! I seem to be getting a ton of treble, so I turned that down to either -4 or -3. Worked like a charm. I love having this!! Thanks OP great write-up!

so basically this should work on the 5th gen as well.... I know that there is a cd changer adapter for it but why spend the money for an adapter when I can use $2 cable from radio shack ....
Anyone tried this on the 5th gen Bose unit????

Rate the Audio Quality improvement vs. tape cassette adapter?!?!

How does the audio quality sound compared to using the headphone jack thru a tape cassette adapter?!

Dumb question probably -- but Im still using the tape cassette adapter.

This is a kewl fix, and a good write-up.

Love how you used that useless coin slot for the jack-in point.

nicely done!

Cd's are obsolete -- so I don't even CARE about fixing the player/changer.

But dang I WISH i could get that stupid SUBWOOFER working 100%.

I could actually LIVE with the BOSE system then.

Thanks for the great write up. I did this on my 2003 Max over the weekend and it worked out great. I lifted/bent the cover up enough to solder the three wires to the cassette board without having to remove the whole unit from the brackets. Those side screws are tough to remove. Sound quality is very good. I bought a TomTom navigation adapter for IPOD Touch on Amazon for about $35 then "purchased" the TomTom app that cost $39. I mounted the TomTom holder right above the A/C vents and ran the power wire and sound wire through the A/C vent duct. I installed a power socket behind the dash. One problem left to solve....I am getting the typical engine whining sounds. I am guessing I need to find a better way to ground the hard wired cable thinking I am causing a ground loop issue. I tried the PAC-SNI-1 and it eliminated the whinning but killed the output sound level. I know that running a power line next to a sound line is typically a problem. I may consider wrapping the hardwired 3.5 wire with shielding to block the sound. I welcome any suggestions on the ground loop/whinning sound.

I'm on my second factory unit and cds blow!

Been using a bs cassette adapter for my HTC EVO and it fades the volume because the tape deck is dirty...

Def doing this over the weekend...

On the 2nd note, my bose woofer is working flawlessly due to a aftermarket amp..

This is the best mod i have done to my Maxima.

To anyone wanting to run an aux jack into the coin tray, make sure you connect an extra section of aux so you can disconnect and remove the headunit easily. My bose has a 5ft tail soldered to the board then superglued to coin tray. If i ever have to remove it again, i will need to fix that. You dont need an extra section if you dont glue it to coin tray or wont ever remove it again. Speaking of which how do you help loosen gorilla glue on top of krazy glue...or where can a get a new coin tray.

i also resoldered my bose amp and the sub works flawless again, sounds better when its not in danger of cutting out all the time (my 03 amp was fixed same way as an 01 i30)
