I've heard that filling your tires with marbles gives your car that nice maraca sound.

i heard that if you put a bag of sand at the cone end of your intake you can polish the inside of your manifolds while running the engine.

well guessing upon the last few responses i would say getting more hot air into the intake isn't the MPG/HP adder i'm looking for so then which would be, CAI or SRI? like i said earlier, i'd like the MPG and a few HP, but if it comes right down to it next year i'll be making somewhat often 2-2.5 hour drives from college so MPG is a bit higher lol

I don't know about other gens or other cars, but the short-ram seems to deliver better gains on the 5.5 gen Maxima. If you read everything this forum has to offer on the subject, that's the majority opinion. It just is. Shame, too, because Injen's apparatus is very pretty.

SRI vs CAI aside, colder (denser) air is obviously desirable. That's why NWP's phenolic spacers work so well on the 5.5 gen, reducing the temperature of the aluminum UIM and intake plenum, which in turn reduces the temperature of the incoming air.

As to MPG... bolt-on intake and exhaust modifications will improve your mileage a few ticks, as long as you drive casually. The added performance encourages you to enjoy the experience, and that will reduce your mileage, obviously. In your case, long highway drives w/cruise control, you'll see an improvement.

When cruising with a SRI and full stock dust shielding, it will be slightly less efficient than a CAI.

I actually have my fender cut out for a CAI and find that my SRI now gets almost identical temps to my CAI above about 15mph as soon as air starts circulating through the engine bay.

Like rochester said, you'll get MPG gains with either if you drive equally (not much, but a little). Headers/Ypipe give a decent gain in mileage as well.

i think the hybrid setup is the best. Short ram with any type of velocity stack. Better throttle response, smoother air flow and better gains at the top end

My dyno gains prove this.

It seems I bit late to mockfest. Which is sad because I heard a sprint booster will improve fuel economy by 17.95%.

Nah. You're still too late. And you need new material.

lol, well i think i'm going to go with the SRI, that'll most likely be my summer DIY so is berk the way to go? or otherwise?

EDIT: as i said earlier, i'm just getting started in cars, is this a pretty easy DIY or would i be wise to enlist help?

Berk sells a very straight forward and simple to install SRI. "Easy" is a relative term specific to each person's abilities. However, yes, this is an extremely easy DIY. Lay out your parts and take your time.

Lots of people will recommend a less expensive route, but there's also value in having a full kit with instructions for someone concerned about the DIY component of this mod.

Im not fully done with it yet because i need to get some filters for what i belive is the vacum line? idk what it is honestly I just know it pulls air and there for needs a small filter but here is my setup its basically 2 in one both CAI and SRI yes the filter does sit next to the engine BUT its where the factory scoop was kinda in a way lol so it pulls in cold air from outside so basically it sucks in both and I have noticed a little more pull from the maxima

Yes Ik she is dirty I just bought some degreaser for it ;D and had gotten some new bolts for basically anything that was rusted =)

IK off topic but I have seen some engine covers for like the 2002/2003 and I am woundering would this fit on a 2000 maxima? if so where could i get one? and is anyone selling one? ill buy it from someone but it has to be paypal =/ sorry....

02/03 Engine cover will not fit. Different valve covers and mounting hole locations.

Doesn't the I30 have an engine cover? If it does, that should fit.

This was my first Custom SRI (berk knock off) where I only had the one silicon coupler and used the original accordion coupler.

I then changed and went with BPI Velocity Stack and the much larger over sized cone filter to allow for better air flow.

I then further modified my setup by changing to a shorter version of the Mid pipe and finally replaced the accordion coupler with a proper silicon coupler, for better fitment and even better air flow.

further improved performance by adding a custom made block plate and deleted the VIAS.

And this is the current setup, awaiting the next update which will be installing new spark plugs and adding NWP Spacers.

As Rochester said with each little change one makes there is a testing period where you drive a bit more aggressively, but once you get over the fact that everything is working just as you wanted it and you are satisfied that you have improved the air flow you will note improvements in the MPG - with the stock air box I was running 10.1 ltr of fuel for 100 km and with the current Custom SRI & BPI Velocity stack and the Vias deleted and block plate installed I am running 8.6 ltr fuel per 100 km.

So it is a combination of little modifications to obtain the desired balance in improved performance and increasing my MPG on my daily drive, that I am current very happy with.

There's always the 2001 Anniversary Edition engine cover. It's kind of small, but still better than going commando.

I love the JWT, had one on my 4th, and now on my 5.5, it doesn't disappoint.

It is one of the few, or at least from what I remember, that has a velocity stack and is 3" ID.

I am excited to get all the go a little bit faster parts bolted on. Suspension and Tires are done. Next week I'm going to do Cattman Headers/FastCatt/3" Cat-back, POP Charger, NWP BOP, Spacers, ETL TS Reflash.

Should make a nice change.
