ok so i got a 02 se 6spd and i went to get coffee this morning and everything was fine. go back into the car start it up and put it in reverse, then all i hear it clicks and clanks like metal rumbling around somewhere and will not reverse or move in first?? please let me know what i can look for or i need to replace i need the car for work so anyone please help

 

I'd say the easiest thing to check would be the shift linkage on the transmission housing. Seems odd that a perfectly good transmission would go with no sign or warning...but a simple linkage issue could very easily do such a thing. How does the clutch feel? Does the play in the shifter feel any different? How was the coffee?

 

the clutch feels fine but even if its in neutral and i release the clutch it makes that noise and sounds like it will stall

 

i'd say maybe one of the springs came out on your clutch disc....are you able to move the gears easily with the engine off?

 

yea all gears go in easy. i started the car again and tried to move it. it started and went in gear but didnt move. then i threw it back into netrual and release the clutch and it stalled. started it back up and release the clutch and all i hear is a metal clanking noise. explained the situation to 2 mechanics and both said i need a new clutch,(neither have actuaclle inspected the car just heard my story) but i find it so hard to beleive because there were no signs of slipping or anything prior.

 

Sounds like the linkage as stated before. One of the linkage lines may have came disconnected, broke, or the bracket broke. Time to look under the hook where the linkage connects to the tranny and look around while someone shifts into all gears. Sounds like it is in a gear since you say it stalls when you release the clutch even in neutral. I hope its that at least because anything else will be costly.

 

ok what am i looking for exactly beacause u i had my friend shift as i look under the hood and see the linkage move in and out of gear but im not a professional so i relly dont know what i should be looking at or for. any help would great i appreciate the help so far. hop i dnt need to change the clutch cuz i dnt have the money for that and there was no signs of any bad clutch thats why its so mind boggling

 

well this same thing happaned to my Sentra before, the clanking sound you hear is probably a peice of clutch ( or clutch disc spring ) rolling around the bellhousing , clanking .

It doesn't have to slip to take a dump, what is problably happening is the spring is lodged in the pressure plate fingers not allowing you to push it in...

 

so basically im screwed and need a new clutch?

 

Take it to a mechanic if you can't diagnose it yourself

 

If it's the clutch, then it's the throwout bearing. Most likely what it is by your description. Maybe even your tranny if it still goes into get though.

 

well either way it looks like the trans has to be looked at if you can't diag it yourself op.

hopefully it is something simple, but if it is your clutch, they aren't terribly difficult to replace ...

 

how can i go about diagnosing it? whether its the trans which i pray its not the trans

 

pretty sure it's not the trans. if it were you might have some difficulty getting it into gears with the engine off.


usually the tell tale sign of a bad clutch is if when the engine is on, you can't push in the clutch pedal or there is difficulty in pushing in the clutch pedal ( when the spring ( s ) lodge in between the pressure plate and clutch disc, it doesn't allow the fingers in the pressure plate to move ) and you grind gears, the clanking sound is probably from a peice of clutch bouncing around in the bell housing, i wouldn't let it to do that too much because it can punch a hole in the bell housing, resulting in needing a new trans.

bur if you can get it into gears w/o the engine running, pretty sure the trans is ok

 

ok cool cuz all gears are fine when car is off reverse is a lil tricky sometime but 1-6 are good so do u guys recommend changing the clutch or just the clutch disc??? or theres no definite untill i take it apart

no definite until you take it apart.

more than likely you will need a new clutch kit , but as long as you don't need a new trans, then a new clutch could be worst case scenario ...


check on Ebay for an Exedy kit, those are a great alternative to OEM ..

 

I got into gears fine when my 1st gear blew. It was when I released the clutch is when the car bucked and you could hear the teeth rattling around in the tranny. Throwout bearing usually makes the clutch drop to the floor and some other symptoms.
