List of maintenance items needed

Hello, just bought a Maxima GLE 2003 auto for the wifey, with 120K miles ...... I don know anything about the previous mait. history, but it's well taken care of, Sorry for this but I'm totally new to the 5.5,would you list me what you would do for general maintenance ? spark plugs , filters , tranny fluid and such ? or you think might wait for sometime and let her enjoy the new ride ? BTW , it runs fine for now

Just wondering, did you buy from a private owner or a dealer?Anyways I would check out all the fluids, spark plugs, brakes and such everything that you would normally check at 120k.

If you want spoon-fed information, I would change:
1. Fluids (oil, tranny) Check your oil levels frequently inbetween changes
2. Spark plugs (you may have some reading to do if you want to diy)
3. Brakes
4. Buy a spare 2001 maf

Welcome to the 5th gen section, enjoy.

I would say check the fluids and change them, have the spark plugs checked, and check the brakes and tires to see if they need rotation, balancing or aligning. I bought an 03 SE about a month ago and I own an 07...I know Maximas but I went ahead and changed the oil and tranny fluid, changewd the plugs and belts, and rotated/balanced/aligned the tires. Next I'm checking the brakes and I'm taking this cheap battery out! You never know about the previous owners habits. AND althuogh this is my daily driver, my wife drives it from time to time when I'm away for work and it gives me peace of mind knowing that everything checks out.

And check the cabin filter...I just checked mine yesterday while I was changing the tranny fluid and it was nasty!

thanks for all the replies...

I bought the Maxima from a private owner...Didn't ask him much about previous maintainance...He bought it from 7 months ago at 115K.....He changed battery, rear calipers(both sides),NEW tires 3k miles before, balanced and look perfect..also he did an oil change (most probably synth.) valvoline at 116k miles.....that's pretty much what I gathered from him...

I have in mind so far :

1.Mobile super synth. 5w30 with M-1 105 filter
2.Amsoil synth tranny fluid (drain and replace)
3.Spark plugs NGK
4.Change fuel filter,air filter
5.PCV valve
6.Might do PS fluid flush and refill
7.Change coolant
8.Check all belts and pullies
9.Might run some Chevron Techron or Gumout injector cleaner
10.Best 93 ocatne gas I can get for the rest of her life (I always put Chevron 93)
11.Check for any hidden codes in the ECU

what else do you think it might need ?

Octane is a gas additive used to retard ignition. Somewhere over the last 3 decades it got all wrapped up with marketing perceptions, probably because high performance engines often have advanced timing, or need gas that burns at higher temperatures.

Your engine is rated for 91 octane gas. Why do you think you should be using 93? That doesn't make any sense.

A lot of Canucks find their cars run best on Ultra94 from Sunoco... It could just be the fuel blend (brand) but I know its not just one person who likes using Ultra94.

I didn't read much of this thread, but want to touch on a few points.

It actually allows for more advanced ignition timing. Higher octane fuels have greater resistance to pre-ignition, allowing for higher peak in-cylinder pressures and more advanced timing.

Any vehicle/engine which recommends an octane rating higher than regular will produce more power with it.

Some areas have 87 octane regular, 89 mid-grade and 93 premium which necessitates the 93 octane for best performance.

On the other hand, my recommendation to the OP:

There's a coolant system connector pipe that runs near the lower oil pan. At 8 years and 58K northeast miles, mine was rusted into uselessness. Check it before it fails.

Also, my front impact airbag sensor had devolved into a small hunk of rust. However, you'll get an airbag warning light before it goes. I'm just saying, look out for that, too.
