help, knocking noises!

2000 maxima SE 5spd w/172,000 miles

No engine lights, no prior engine problems

I was on the interstate memorial day weekend it was 2am so i decided, no cops, so I'll cruise at 90mph (3800rpm in 5th gear). I stop for gas and when I'm slowed down I hear whining noises coming from the engine. I figure its just the belt so i keep going

Anyways, yesterday I start driving and I hear faint knocking with a little bit of grinding mixed in. Anyone know what I should check? Thank you!

first thing is to pinpoint the area of the noise and then work on what the noise might be.

Might be a bad bearing on the tensioner pulley or the alternator pulley. Check the passenger side of the engine first and find where the noise is coming from.

Now when I start the car I hear a loud 'sighing' noise, if that makes sense. Took it to a guy today for a second opinion and said it's either alternator or something in the belt assembly. The first guy said it sounded like a cracked bearing in the crankshaft, but I figured no loss in power and when I rev the engine it revs smoothly and noise doesn't get any louder so my feeling is the belt/alternator, good call Will.

So the course of action now is remove belts/accessories/alternator and figure out where the noise is coming from. Is this serious enough to warrant not driving around till I get it fixed?

Since its becoming progressively worse, then i wouldnt drive it unless i had to... But if you cant wait for the mechanic maybe can you get some one to press the accelerator for you while youre under the hood to determine exactly where the noise is coming from/what the hell it is

Change your belts, get a gatorback belt. and you should be straight. you either have a cheap belt or the tensioner is loose.

i had a similar problem a while back with my 2k max i kept hearing a knocking sound but everything looked fine till i took off the belts. some how and something chipped one of my pulleys so i replaced the pulleys and went with the gatorback belts. since then running smooth n quiet.
