Gas Mileage 5.5

Gas Mileage 5.5
I haven't been calculating my gas mileage lately but I'm wondering if anyone came up with any ways to improving gas mileage besides being up to date on maintenance? All of mine is done religiously along with nitrogen in the factory rims/tires.
This comes to mind after seeing a new mustang commercial where it claims to have 31mpg highway and 305 horsepower. With those numbers I'll feel like a fool keeping my 5.5 who has 250hp (I think) and low 20's on highway if I'm lucky.
So I drive 80mph interstate 80% of time in my automatic so that puts me at around 3000rpm which is ok but not great. My confusion comes when I think about 60mph at 2000rpm but longer traveling distance ??? lol
One thread I read a long time ago said something about a guy having his transmission rebuilt and changing out the gearing with a nissan truck and achieving 30mpg (I think).

It's 255bhp? At least I'm close
Well I will PROBABLY be doing my tranny soon and one way or another I'd like to hit 30mpg. Perfect conditions would be 2k rpm while going 80. The only concern is that if I slightly pressed the gas while going 80 it would put me into 4th...
Also I'm wondering how cars with more HP and american of all things are getting better gas mileage?

Replace the MAF. It's the source of all problems Especially bad MPG if everything else is good.
MPG is not calculated in real world testing. They slap it on a dyno. Epic fail.
But much better gearing definitely helps the new ****stang.

For $30K.
I test drove the 2010 GT last year, and the only thing that kept me from getting emotionally attached was knowing Ford was about to do something big: either a 5.0 V8, or the Eco-Boost. I rather thought they'd wait until 2012, but am so happy they did it now. My next car won't happen until 2012 anyway.
American muscle. Maybe a mid-life crisis moment. One last fling, you know?
If not, there's always Infiniti. That's familiar ground, at least.

No I get consistent mileage in the low 20's so I'm ok for now. Just gas prices are inching up and I'm in favor of more power AND better mileage
My cousin has a rock crawler and it's lacking a lot of the parts (MAF, 02 sensor) that calculate how much gas is dumping into the engine. He basically payed a guy $600 to do some sort of calculation to control his fuel injection.
I need to give him a call and ask him more details...
EDIT: Infiniti doesn't have any better MPG than we?

You know, if you had to have a dilemma to agonize over, this is a great one to have.
Um, here's some on-topic stuff, so that I don't totally ***** this thread:
Mustang GT 5.0 - 17 mpg city, 24 mpg hwy
Infiniti G37 --- 18 mpg city, 26 mpg hwy
Infiniti G37 --- 18 mpg city, 26 mpg hwy

IIRC correctly the base GT is 30K, and the only option i want in the brembos which is like 1700. they wont be selling for sticker, so im sure you can get one out the door for like 32K

mustang its a nice car looks good and has some power but to me its not worth the money at all, not just does a ford lose value quick but the quality isnt there after 100,000 miles either

Well I paid 9k plus 2300 for a 4yr/48k mile bumper to bumper warranty for an 02max gle with 60k on it about 3 years ago. I can probably sell it today with 90k for 7ish.... not so bad right?
Everything new will drop 1/3 of it's value in 2-3 years, at the very least.

LOL Joking right? When is the last time you looked to see how much your maxima was worth? The new Stangs deliver Vette bang for buck value.

I don't think I've ever gotten above 26 mpg, but also haven't had a highway only tank. In stop and go commuter traffic I get ~20 mpg. I'm thinking it may be time to preemptively replace the primary oxygen sensors.

My Maxima is 8 years old with 60K miles. So from my POV, I'll hit end-of-life long before 100K miles. It doesn't matter.

I'll actually fill up and test soon but how the FK can you get 500miles a tank, especially with an automatic?
