Funny, how thread went from MPG to the Mustang. I sat in the new Camaro at the NY Auto Show and I was pretty disappointed, not so much the quality but it felt like I was sitting in a tank. I checked out the new Mustang and I was disppointed again....because I liked it. It's funny how you can get caught up in the Ford vs Chevy BS. LOL. Btw, I am pretty sure Chevy is coming out with a 500+HP Camaro since Ford had to go and make a fast car. It's kinda cool that horsepower wars are coming back.

Oh yeah, and I average in the lows 20's MPG but since I got my new exhaust I've in the throttle more than usual...so probably not much anymore.

i guess you guys just jealous. i drive like a gram-pa on totally stock maxima. if i have need for speed i have other vehicle for that. as far as family sedan its more then enough and good buy for money. if maxima would be more expansive i would definitely drive 06+ avalon (that gets 22c/31h my friend have one and i've driven it my self so i can confirm those numbers).

Kind of. And for that I'm sorry for my contributions to the hijack. But you have to admit two points:
1. Mileage threads are a dime a dozen, and don't have any special value when on-topic.

2. Someone else brought up the Mustang, in the originating post. Um, you, maybe?

keeping with the topic here.. I've heard of guys getting better fuel economy with some performance mods.. Can anyone comment on this? I've seen a noticeable improvement with just the timing advance

Lightweight wheels/tires (37.5lb combo) will help tremendously. (8-12% in my case)

If you want a mustang

1.) go buy a 99-04 cobra
2.) go buy a Kenne Bell Supercharger
3.) welcome to a ten second car for 12k

so why would you go spend 30k for a new one??

Been tracking mine lately, and I get 22.8 mpg with heavy ac use and city driving with my 6spd. Also have around 134,000 miles, no spark plug changes. Got 34 mpg driving around 80 for 8 hours, all in 6th gear, no hills, at about 65,000 miles. So overall not too bad. I don't beat on it at all. Wish I had the money to freshen the motor. I know it needs it.

Um, if your tracking it and not beating on it, what's the point of tracking it?

12K They don't have decent cobras around here for under $16K and the SC is $5-7K vs a NEW car that handles better nearly as fast stock, better made, and with a warranty. The new 5.0 is already in the 10s N/A btw.

You get what you pay for. A brand new 2011 GT is WORLDS better than any new edge 99-04 model. If you even stop to take a look at the many strides in quality that Ford has made with all of their cars, you would understand.

And yes it has a live axle because its cheaper, Ford made it handle better than its IRS competitors, and what do guys with Mustangs typically do? Drag race them.

For high HP setups, an IRS = wheel hop and tons of **** breaking.

Tracking as in tracking my mileage (the original topic). Not taking it to the track. Thought you would get that by reading my post. Guess the Mustang talk got you hyped up.

Seriously, why are we talking about gas mileage in a 5.5 and running 10's in a Mustang?

The SC is 3300-5300 its right on the website . Only thing you need is a rust free straight body with an engine thats not beaten on, everything else can be replaced for dirt cheap since there are 10492948092589351839857 mustangs in the world.

Your goals don't make sense. You can get a car that's fast for cheap or one that's economical for cheap. Why would you pay good money for a new mustang? It's just a mustang, it's not a car with "upscale quality" as rochester put it. If your going to pay real money why not get something else?

BTW I owned a mustang until recently so I'm not some sort of import fan boy.

That would be a lighter wheel, not lower diameter. Lowering roatational mass would help on acceleration, not MPG. A lower diameter would increase RPM, therefore using more gas. Simple concept.

Read Post #1.

In the context of mileage, the OP opened the door for discussion on the Mustang.

I used the mustang for a HP to MPG comparison. You guys went Mustang crazy on me.

So I have 1 tip for lowering gas mileage... Lighter tire/wheel combo. Anything else?

Google the phrase "hypermiling".

But first... this picture. Makes my transverse V6 seem so wrong.

If you would get a Mustang from that generation you would want a 03/04 Cobra AKA as the Terminator....... Those are bad a*s, but you might as well get a an 11 GT as Terminators don't go for cheap. BTW 03/04 Terminators have Independent suspension!

transverse is your only suggestion?

In 60 miles
1st maxima is going 60mph at 2k rpm
2nd maxima is going 80mph at 3k rpm

Since the 1st maxima has to drive an EXTRA 15 minutes vs maxima 2 BUT it's using half the gas. FK transverse

215/55-17's? This will still be off due to the advertised tire size giving an approximate overall diameter since the sidewall size and its numbers represents an unloaded tire.

1.Change the MAF(or check out the thread about the CRC MAF Cleaner, supposedly does magic for maximas health!)
2.Change the Fuel Filter
3.Dont get a SRI or CAI cause you will be stabbin the throttle goin.... mannn that sounds cool as hell
4.dont be datin any porkers cause more weight in the car = less MPG

and for my 5th tip, if were talkin about value for 1/4 mile times, go buy a 98-02 f body for 4k and be running 13.1-13.4.....I/H/E tune and tires... mid 12's... spray...11's... and ur still under 6k.. with A/C... funk a new 5.0

Yeah and have a crappy old rattly F-body that looks like a knock-off batmobile. No thanks. Again, you get what you pay for.

Most mpg I ever got in my Maxima was 34 driving 65mph on a road trip. I average 27mpg in mixed city/highway driving which I consider to be pretty good for a 7 year old car with a 3.5 V6

my 03 auto w/ 90k gets 32 on the highway (recently verified traveling I80E thru PA) so i would suggest the cleanings mentioned above bc the auto has the potential...

also, new mustang is awesome, gotta love the 5.0 but still doesn't handle, 370z all day long

you would save more money by keeping the maxima then pay up for the new mustang... really it only seems alot at the pump, but your only paying maybe a couple hundred more a year. but the added performance and fuel mileage wouldnt hurt though.. but if money isnt an issue go ahead....
