1. never top off. When the fuel gets warmer, it needs to have room to expand. If you're topped off it may not have room.
2. check and see if your fuel overflow drain is clogged or dumping *into* the car. IIRC you can see it behind the trunk paneling. If it's not attached or leaking, that means when you overfilled, it dumped the fuel into the inside of the trunk/fender area..

There could be a small fuel leak in one of your lines. Where under the car did you see a puddle? IIRC the fuel lines run next to the brake lines, under the right side of the vehicle. If one had a leak it could explain the smell in the cabin. If I was you I would let the car idle for a bit, and take a look under the car.

Do not top off.

How does topping off add value?

I'm thinking about junking it. Looks like a lot of crap under there for nothing.

I used to be a "topper." And quit doing it. Big signs on gas stations...no topping.

Lot to do with the environment. Escape of fumes.

Let's do our portion.

I now despise people spending 15 seconds trying to squeeze a few more cents into their tank like it is the end of the world.

I would speculate that at least 50% of you (I quit) are doing it. STOP.

Save your 10~15 seconds and make it worthwhile. And do something for the environment. Peace!
