00/01 vs 02/03

It'll be every bolt on HP mod available to get that 30 BHP....the 3.5 will still be highway cruising in near silence, and the 3.0 will be droning along with headers, intake, exhaust...
Quiet is the new fast.
Also: Probably not a concern to the OP in Vegas, but HLSD rocks from a standstill in snow.

Having owned a 00 5 spd SE and now my current 03 6 spd SE I can say without a doubt the 5.5 Gen with HLSD is the superior car. It only makes sense, its evolution. If you are in the Market for a Maxima then its worth the money for the 5.5
The diff argument?...Well that is mostly opinion again and how it plays out in drag racing is rather irrelevant when comparing the 2 generations of cars.
Does it work better at any point in time? Yes. In the wet and snow it hooks surprisingly well.
In my mind this means that it is an advantage and therefore better.
Look for and HLSD car, you won't regret it.

As far as my uses for the car. I am a title runner so I drive around all day. In winter time I spend pretty much every weekend at some snow resort, usually big bear, ca. Whichever one I go to involves a lot of mountain climb driving and then driving in snow. What I don't do is really race anyone. I enjoy a powerful car and I will do some mods but not for the purpose of racing just for the purpose of making it a better car for the amount of time I spend driving.
Rochester: I did think your post was pretty good and convincing on looking for the 5.5

I will say this, if you're highway driving all the time and you live in 6th gear, you should be hovering between 26-29 mpg. And a well modified car can actually get a few ticks better mileage then OEM.
Hmm, Honeoye Falls. Small world.

Seems the 2001 SE 5AT got 21/27 mpg, and the 2003 SE 6MT got 21/28. This according to AutoTrader.

One thing I haven't heard anyone mention is camshaft positions sensors on 5.5 gens... I had an 03 I35 and it seemed like I was putting a set in it all the time... 3 sets and I owned the car between 33k and 118k... maybe that's extreme, but I thought that was worth mentioning so that one could be prepared for that.
I never got to drive a 6mt 5.5, but I did step out of the I35 (automatic, softer suspension) and into a 5 speed 5th gen for a test drive and found myself wanting the older less powerful car.. just so much more personality.
I've only testdriven a 5th gen, but I remember that 5.5 turning like an aircraft carrier in parking maneuvers compared with 3rd and 4th gens I've owned.
