Not as long as the only transmission is a CVT.

Take a 7th gen for a test drive, Scott. Keep an open mind and you'll find it does what it does very efficiently. Almost deceptively so.

Here. It goes on for quite a bit of reading.

Before I converted, I thought the 3.0 could hang.... But then I went 5MT

4AT is good on gas though...

Aye. But as I wrote in that thread, if for whatever reason I lost my left foot...

Well, you could do far worse than a 7th Gen Maxima.

stay on topic...we are comparing a 3.0 to a 3.5...and auto 3.0 is a slow pig...shifts are slow

In the end, its probably the best cvt I have tried so far, but Im not praising it thats for sure.
I think the maxima has the best cvt in the industry but Dual clutch is the future not cvt.
The CVT is unconventional to say the least. But it delivers on torque, mpg, and quick shifts. The issue seems to be it's idiosyncratic driving experience. A normal manual starts low in the rpm band and revs higher. The CVT starts high in the band and goes lower. It sounds almost like a slipping automatic tranny. It's off-putting and you may think you're driving a ricer.
Just finished our first long trip in the Maxima (500 klics each way) and the CVT still leaves me scratching my head a bit. From launch it seems to take a second for the trans to decide what it wants to do. Sitting on cruise control at 110 to 120 kph and transitioning into a downhill, one gets the feeling that you've just driven off a cliff. I really thought perhaps the engine had stalled and had to check the tach. Road speed never varied though. It's a little unnerving. I've also noticed the sound, like the gyro winding down on a small plane, when you park.
the CVT though on the downside takes away from the Maxima in being a true sports sedan, plain and simple, the smooth, high whinny drone it makes under acceleration does nothing to make the car feel sporty in its driving compared to a regular automatic transmission or manual for that matter
The love isn't completely universal, plus you have people who've paid $35-42k for a car who knew full well going in they could only get the CVT, I don't suspect they will rip the CVT unless it craps out on them. I've driven a few cars with CVTs (including a newer Altima) and just can't get used to the slipping clutch feeling or the soggy out of the hole acceleration. On the plus side, you don't get caught in the wrong gear with roll-on acceleration so I can see the appeal there. However, with a car advertised as the return of the 4DSC, I think Nissan missed the boat by not having a manual transmission option. Hell, you can still get a 6 speed in an Altima, right?

Not saying that it cant. But trust me, if you were to ever convert to manual, or drive a manual maxima you will see what I mean. Its still quicker than other cars out there because of the VQ, but slow in stick shift maxima standards.

For instance, my friend's intake/y-piped 4th gen beat a B18 vtec hatchback civic which is considered "fast" by most locals, but I will walk my friends maxima.

Oh I know the manual is faster no doubt, I also know that the maxima even as an automatic gives a lot of other cars a run for their money.

Theoretically a stock 2k2 vs. modded 2k1 should ultimately be a driver's race w/ the obvious advantage tipped to the 3.5. However, pound for pound, the 3.5 is more likely to win. There are no guarantees in life

note: from the info I collected........

srsly... the car has a half liter more displacement. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to assume that the same practical car with a bored out motor and 6spd tranny is going to be much faster. i don't understand how there is even argument here lol. i have a 3.0 and would never say, "ill bet i could take down that 5.5" unless it were bonestock. then MAYBE.

silliness, just silliness.

That's a fair summary, yes.

I rather agree with the quote that suggested dual-clutch automatics are the future over CVT. But that's guesswork which doesn't consider that most people don't give a rat's behind what kind of transmission is in their car, and almost no one drives a MT anymore.

The only thing that's certain is that transmissions are changing.

Remember driving MT cars that shifted on the column?

Truth.

Who can argue the 5.5 has got speed over a 5th gen? It's like disputing the Maxima being a sedan

But who cares let's take up some space lol

I love the 3rd-5.5th gen, but as far as new cars go, for $42k you can do better than a 7th gen max.

Not quite that old!

My first manual transmission car was a 1974 Z/28. 3800 lb pressure plate and a Hurst shifter.

$42K?

Either learn how to negotiate for a car, or stop using Canadian money.

Quite hoenstly that thread, as long as it is, has a whole helluva a lot of technical information.

I found out about the differences in VB's from old to newr 02/3's and posted pics, there is some HR talk in there regarding the intake manifold from the new altima .. etc.
