Is this True?
Is this True?
"The U.S. Tire and Rim Association specifies that the minimum acceptable rim width for tire sizes 235/45R17 and 245/45R17 is 7.5". As a result, no tire manufacturer in the world will approve the use of 7.0" wide rims for those tire sizes. In every case WITHOUT EXCEPTION, manufacturer specifications that indicate otherwise are either in error or a misprint. Don't believe me? Call the manufacturers yourself. But if you want to save some time, don't bother. I already have.
You would be well advised to disregard statements to the contrary from a retail outlet or ANY MEMBER OF THIS FORUM. Keep in mind that just because a tire appears to fit properly on a rim, that doesn't mean it's safe."

Please for the love of everything you hold holy in this world, NO MORE!! hehe.
It's quote right? Where did you get it and it's up to you to believe the source that provided it.
Anyway, why chance it for a whooping 10mm of tread? You guys want to run 45 series tires that bad??

That's not quite the reasoning we would look to for a good recommendation.
I mean I could run only 4 lugs on my wheels and have no problems either.
Hey if you know the risk then it's your decesion I guess.

Hey All,
No manufacturer is going to accept the liability on an established margin, I have no doubt that 7.5" wheel for a 235/45/17 tire is a conservative margin, as products manufactured to overengineered tolerances and a conservative limit within them is set.
I as others on this board can't reccommend a size of tire outside the manufacturer's limit. BUT like myself have chosen on my own accord to put a set of 235/45/17 (Dunlop SP 5000) on my SE rims, as I'm not an real aggressive driver I feel the assigned risk is far easier to bear than riding on those OEM POS Potenzas.
I've had the tires on my car for nearly a year without any alignment, wear, or handling abnormalities. If afforded the opportunity to up grade my wheels I would opt for a wider 7.5 or 8" but I'm happy with the choice I've made.
