Whatever you do, get "high power" LEDs. Otherwise they'll be too dim.
V-LEDs.com is more expensive but they're the best.

Well there are 4 number 74 bulbs lighting up the gauges and various others for signal lights etc. But just 4 for the gauge illumination. If you know how to solder, I'd recommend using some bigger 194 bulbs and using a dremel to bore out the holes a bit. Here's a link where someone did it with incandescent bulbs (which I don't recommend - too hot). But you do the same thing.

This is what I'd do if I hadn't done my crazy 109 LED gauge conversion...
Or just try the #74's. They'd probably be ok. As long as they're high power... Like these for instance:

Bro I'm on my cell but you do a little looking around the 5th gen forum there's a really good write up on using both bulb styles. I recommend the larger led bulb if u can solder and have patience. There was also someone offering the service on 4th gen clusters and I think he can do these as well. It shows which style and the outcome for both installations. Takes a little soldering but appears to be well worth it.

Also check out the how to link in the top. Breaks down a lot of...mods? Upgrades? Projects? And keeps the old heads from blowing a gasket lol.

i must say i got hyper white 3 smd #24 leds...and i am
disappointed. hot spots on the 40-60 mph and 3-4k rpm like a bish.
it looks allright in complete darkness..somehow the hotspots are less visible as compared partial light when hotspots are highly visible.
pics do not effectively capture how it looks in person. trust me. either do it proper with 80+ leds cuz i dont think the 4 #24 will satisfy most.

pics of hyper white smd

Yeah, like I already told the OP, you MUST get "high power". Like at LEAST 0.5 watt or more.

Yes, but not as bad... There's no way to completely avoid hotspots w/ LEDs unless you do a full conversion like I did... but that was crazy.. took me 3 days. And you have to be good at soldering/fabricating stuff. (and I GUESS there are technically still minor hotspots, etc... but I love it)
Like this!

Oh, and here's a couple of my threads that have good info on them if you read through them (I think the 2nd one has the best info with regard to what you're looking for).

My LEDs

eBay search item #
200474824190

that's the high power Led I used. Same item same seller. Claims to be the brightest around. You see my results. Next if I retry will be concave LEDs. Widest range LEDs avail in high power to try to spread likght to avoid hotspots...??
Feedback.

I would consider it, but in order for it to be worth my time, I'd have to charge you an arm and a leg.

You'll have to scroll down to the Tri-Power 3 LED bulbs. They look like this:
http://superlumination.com/images/au...24_ts_w_wm.jpg

I moved 5 different sets of LEDs into my guages on my 02 Max. These were far and away the best when it came to hotspots vs brightness. There are brighter bulbs... but they come with crazy hotspots. Likewise, there are more evenly spread bulbs... that are just too dim. These were the ones that seemed to be the best compromise.

A couple of thoughts for someone that hasn't done this before:

1.) Hotspots: LEDs are directional lighting, unlike incandescent bulbs. This means that any LED made to fit and replace the incandescent bulbs will show some hotspots. The ONLY way to avoid this is a custom setup with a backing densely littered with diodes... there are writeups on how to do this. However, if you are going to attempt that, you must have tremendous time, patience, and at least a basic knowledge of electrical mechanics. If you looking for a plug & play... those that I linked are the best.

2.) Don't get blue LEDs. Get white. This was a lesson I learned the hard way. Blue LEDs are a sharper blue, however, they are dimmer and have worse hotspots than the white. You will not be able to read your trip displays at night. White, on the other hand, is brighter with fewer hotspots and will still show your trip displays at night well. They will still appear blue on the guages because there is a blue film behind the guage (This is why with yellow incandescent backlight, the display appears green).

Hey Henry,

You couldn't start a new thread because all users must have at least 15 posts before they are able to start new threads. This helps cut back on spam.

As for your question, there is a thread at the top of this page for new people (less than 15 posts) to ask any 5th gen related questions they have, and it gets far more attention than this thread will. You'll probably have better luck posting your question there.
