Largest resonator for 5.5 gen?

I'm looking to quiet the car down and remove some of the rasp - the 3" straight pipe to a Borla is starting to get to me! So I guess it's really an oval muffler, not a resonator. I like Magnaflow products and would like to stay with them but I was wondering if a 6" round muffler/resonator would be too big to fit in the "exhaust channel". I saw a 7" round which absolutely has to be too big, I think.

Really looking for a solid suggestion from someone how has done this before. Also, would a 14" quiet the car down enough or would I need to go with a 36"? I worry that might be a little too long or possibly make the car silent which I don't want. I don't want to have to do this multiple times so I would like to pick the right resonator the first time. Thanks!

While a 6in round resonator will fit, it will require a new hangar (if not two) to keep from banging on both of the exhaust braces. I actually bought the magnaflow 6" round 36" long planning to install it, and sold it for the smaller 4"x22. The 22" took just about all the rasp out of my car's exhaust note, but then again, I have a stock cat as well. Check out summitracing.com, they have the best prices.

I was thinking about this one here...

http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=12649

But I read another thread on a 3" exhaust with a 6" round resonator and it seemed like it barely fit and Sparks said he had his crossmember redone to fit the 6" round. Will it fit without modifying the crossmember and without rubbing or buzzing on anything??

Or maybe this one...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-12867/

3" in/out, 5" round, 14" long, 20" overall. Kinda wish I could find a longer magnaflow like 26" or 28" overall. What is more important for keeping rasp and noise down - a rounder muffler or a longer one?

EDIT: I'm just worried about going with a name I haven't heard of before. I'm wondering if it would be best to just stick to MagnaFlow or maybe try something different...

To be honest, I'm not sure. I got it as a freebee from a shop around here. I know it came off like a camaro or trans am, that's all I know.

Any more suggestions?

Chambers are needed to rid yourself of rasp. I got rid of mine with a spiral flow by moroso. Tossed a 22" resonator before that (4" body) to quiet the tone. Test piped in front, coming out of a stock muffler in the rear.

I've been on the fence re: the Cattman 3" .. but the more I hear/listen to it, the less I want to bastardize the beautiful system.

Thanks for all the info, guys. So just a resonator won't remove rasp?

NmexMAX, any sound clips?

Thanks for the video! Sounds good!

Now, I just need to make a decision... I wanna buy 1 piece that will minimize rasp and quiet it down without it being too quiet. So I'm thinking like a 4" or 5" round about 20-24". Think that will do it?

Yeah, but he had a stock cat.. that was wyche ... stock cat would make a huge difference vs test pipe and the muffler is different, which would have an even greater effect.

I think I am going to go with a Jones Exhaust A5022B - 5" Round 22" resonator (27" total). I believe they are a perforated core and I read a few good things about them. The only thing is that it's backordered on Summit So I'm trying to find it somewhere else that has it in stock.
