How reliable is the '02 and '03 vs. '00 and '01?

then someone will get their feelings hurt when they are told the VQ35 is better than their precious DE-K

had a 2000 good car love the 3.5 but mine is on that oil burning like damn tranny problems right now in the shop but looking to get a 04, 05, 06, or 07 Maxima engine about next June or sooner cause damn tired of adding oil but the ride is very reliable and wouldn't change for a 3.0 just a 3.5 that doesn't burn oil!!

my dad bought our 5th gen back in the day brand new and other than the normal maintenance stuff: brakes, fluids, tires etc. At 105k now THe only thing that went bad were both wheel bearings and MAF(which was my fault)

a quick reminder of the 1st rule of the 5th gen forum...a rule that should be followed...AND enforced

Cool, well thank you for all the awesome replies. It sounds like there are definitely pros and cons between the 5th gen and 5.5 gen. As for power, that's not a top concern for me (used to be when I wasn't carrying around a wife and 2 kids, haha), but reliability is the most important thing for me. Well, maybe that's not entirely true or else I'd only be looking at hondas and toyotas (which are sooooo boring). Thanks for the help!

Buy a 5.5 if you find one that doesn't burn oil or grind gears. The precats break up and often get sucked into the engine, thus damaging the rings. This happens on 5.5 and 6th gen cars.
So if you do buy a 5.5, as a preventive measure, by some headers, since they eliminate precats and add like 20whp...

its been proven (and admitted by nissan) that it was simply bad rings from the factory
IF precat material got in to the cylinders, it would damage the cylinder walls causing compression issue/oil getting past the rings
there are several people that got headers and then developed oil burning thousands of miles later...cant blame that on the precats
stick to your DE-K knowledge

a few have THOUGHT that might be the problem...has NEVER been proven
but there is significant evidence that its just bad rings...from my 2 year ordeal, other people on here, info from other forums (Z and G), and NNA
you know what will make a cat fall apart...extra heat from burning oil caused by bad rings

A counterpoint to SoonerFan's post regarding catalyst break-up:

If the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level, and the driver continues to operate the vehicle ignoring noticeable engine noise, engine damage may occur which could result in a fire.
