Attn 5 spd owners
Boyz, I have noticed a weird sound my car is making when taking off from the start and letting the clutch go slowly. It comes on when the engagement begins, and only in 1st gear from the start.
My friend who's driving a manual Sentra said it may be due to the weakened tension on the belts. I dont believe this **** is normal. My car has 20,600 miles on it.
Now rap to me, wazzup?

I cant call it the really high-pitched sound...It is coming from powertrain, thats for sure, if not from the clutch. I ruled the clutch out, because this **** happening only in 1st gear from the take-off.
Thanks for that thread, Sprint. Anyone w/5th gen had the same problem? Yes, it is like a grinding noise, but not metall-w/metall. Ooh, I guess it is time to see the dealer.

Chattering would be your flywheel has hotspots on it from slipping it too much after time. Had that happen on my 98.

I had clutch chatter on my old max (97 SE). It is from (I am told) not slipping the clutch enough (I dont know, several mechanics I know told me that) and that I was slapping the clutch too hard instead of slipping it more gently. After evaluating my driving style, I realized they were correct. I have a tendency of engaging the clutch very quickly at low rpms.
Anyway, that car had clutch groan from day one, and got worse as time went on (probably from the chatter.) Even after being replaced, the chatter was gone, but still had the moaning. I have read here actually that the groaning is actually a resonating sound caused by vibration in the drivetrain. Take that with a grain of salt.
Someone told me to get rid of the chatter (not the groaning) or at least diminish it, you should burnish the clutch. This consists of holding down the brake and gas at the same time, and gently and quickly partially engaging the clutch and quickly disengaging it. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it did seem to work a little. Take that with a grain of salt also.
Anyway, my current max (00 SE) has no moaning at all.

Throw-out bearing. My brother got a BMW 325ic and about a month later his car made a godawful whacking noise, like the driveshaft (it's RWD don't forget) was off-balance and smacking the transmission tunnel. Only happened in first gear under hard acceleration then got worse and worse until he started to get it in third under half-throttle. Oh and my brother drives like a bat out of hell ALL THE TIME. He liked to chirp third just for fun and would race anyone, so if you drive REALLY hard, get this checked out. He also needed to replace the yoke that operates the T/O bearing.
