Which Muffler to get

All..need some advise on which muffler to buy (only muffler). Nothing too loud, not looking to get 5 "0" attention. Willing to spend about $140, less is always good. I'm not a daily driver.
Thanks

Replacement muffler? Get a Bosal.

A performance sounding muffler will cost you double what your limit is, and will not actually perform any better.

The Dynomax Superturbo is a pretty mild sounding muffler. Doesn't sound like a can, and is pretty cheap.

Thrush, Walker, Magnaflow (thru Summit Racing), are some. Are you looking for a dual tip or single tip?

Get a turbo style muffler if you want quiet. They still outflow stock mufflers and are usually only a little louder than stock.

Good thread, I've been thinking the same thing.
I like that my Maxima is nice and quiet, but with the 6MT I almost wish it had more of a Mustang GT "burble" to it at idle and some rumble under acceleration.

The videos someone here posted of the Cattman system sounded really good...

Turbo mufflers use larger interior pipes to quiet the exhaust without adding significant back pressure.

Flowmaster is for domestics. I wouldn't put it on an import. Way too raspy.

Dynomax makes some pretty good ones, the Walker Quiet Flow is nearly as quiet as a stock exhaust but flows something like 70% better if I remember right.

eww, glass packs would be the worst thing to get. yea it sounds good at idle but when you accelerate it sounds like crap. having all that popping noise coming out of your tail pipes is wosre than it sounding raspy...

flowmaster is probably the only "domestic" muffler that wouldnt make your car sound "raspy"...

I might have to get the Flowmaster 40 muffler. If mine was an Automatic, I would leave it alone.

But if I have to shift it, I want it to sound like a Mustang GT and have a nice burble to it at idle.

So, I dropped by a Midas Muffler shop today to find out what it would cost to have a Flowmaster 40 installed on my Max.
They did not have it in stock, would have to order it, Ok, that's cool
But price installed not including a chrome or stainless tip was estimated at $275.

That seems pretty pricey considering I can buy one from Amazon for $69. $200 bucks plus just to weld the thing to the tail pipe and a couple hangers? I was not impressed.

Near where I work I saw a sign that said "Custom Exhaust systems", so I stopped in.
They have the Flowmaster 40 in stock
Total price including the tip of my choice would be $175 for parts and labor.

I'm gonna have to do this in a couple weeks with my next bonus check...

What has been your experience with pricing on muffler installs?

seems about right, when I had my 40 series on that was about what they charged me for parts and labor also. That was when I lived in TX, but like it was said, it depends on the shop, and also the area of town. You just gotta shop around. I went to a mom and pop shop because the muffler wasnt gonna be permanent so I think what you are paying is a fair price.

So you are running a 2.5" Bosal muffler with the Cattman B pipe? Do you have by any chance have the Bosal part number?

Thanks!

No I'm running a Cattman 3" catback, but my previous setup was a WSP 2.5" cat, Cattman 2.5" bpipe, with an Oem rear muffler.....The Bosal is the same design without the variable output chamber....p/n 278025

Thanks for your response. So it sounds like you reduced your 2.5" B-pipe to use the 2" Bosal muffler, correct?

I just had a 2.5" mandrel bent tubing kit from VRS Exhaust put on my 2002 SE 6-speed with a 4"x18" Magnaflow resonator and a 2.5" turbo XLerator Big Max turbo muffler out back. This is the wife's car - I want more flow with little increase in noise. The result I got is OK at idle, OK under full throttle, but too loud (deep drone) at cruise - low RPM and light throttle, or even trailing throttle.

Any recommendations for a 2.5" muffler to swap for this turbo muffler and quiet the exhaust down? At this point, I would go for an OEM style 2.5" muffler if anyone knows one that would fit. I'm also looking at the Walker Quiet Flow and the Dynomax VT (for 4L engine).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

The Cattman Bpipe and Oem rear muffler bolted straight up with a little bit of work on the Oem rear muffler flange using a cat SS gasket.....I run that setup for 4-5 yrs, its awesome especially with the Cattman headers, you really hear the exhaust gurgling during acceleration and decceleration and during cruise it just like OEM on the highway and city streets.....it's really responsive and linear works best with a SRI....... the Injen intake hurts it's topend....Exhaust gases shoot out the back of the car for about 25-30 feet during dyno pulls....it feels like a jet! The setup is really my favorite cause it's the best of both worlds, but my 3" Cattman has more ***** and brute force that just breaks the tires loose with ease right before the 1-2 gear change.....sorry I'm off topic!!!!

Many thanks for taking the time to pull this response together. I understand what you were running and appreciate hearing your impressions on the power and sound. If I were able to start over, I might very well go this route, but I was trying to keep 2.5" all the way through the muffler.

Given where I am, with 2.5" running all the way to the rear muffler, I will probably reduce the piping to 2" right before the rear muffler and install a direct factory replacement (e.g., Bosal) after the reduction. Or I will try to find an OEM-type muffler in a 2.5" inlet/outlet and of appropriate size to fit under the car.

Whatever I do, I will make sure to report back here.

Bill

2.25", with typically poor factory bends. The official diameter is probably something metric, but IDK for sure.

The OEM muffler is actually a pretty good design, with reasonable compromise between performance and sound. But the OEM dual-tips are really poor. Nothing says "cheap" like a chrome, slip-on sleeve. (Hello, Honda.)

I'm surprised yours is still going strong. Mine started failing somewhere around 40K miles.

Is there any drone in the 60-80mph range?
