How much oil to add after teardown?

Finally finished up my timing chains, tensioners, guides & water pump. I added 4 1/4 quarts started it up and took it for a test drive and it's running just fine. Let it sit overnight and checked the oil this morning and the dipstick is completely dry! How much oil do you have to add when the engine has been pulled apart and completely drained? There are no oil leaks either

FSM says 5.25 qt for a dry engine (engine overhaul).

hmpf - a quart shy should still show on the dipstick.

I'd go 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 more!

Good job Roasader!
Did you about **** yourself while you hit the ignition to start the engine?!?!

I tore my motorcycle engine down last winter for the first time....and the CLATTER it made when I first started-it-up was NERVE-RACKING!!

went-away in two seconds as the oil got back-into the cam-chain tensioners tho.

The FSM states that 5.25 US qts are needed after an engine overhaul wherein the oil was completely drained.

That is why you prime the oil pump before you start

I ran the starter for about 20 seconds with the coils unplugged before I actually started it but it still had a loud rattle for a couple seconds.

So another quart put it a little above the low mark but I'll let it settle for a few hours and check it again.

It's OK, running with 4 and a bit quarts would not have caused any harm.

May I just ask why you changed your timing components anyways?

On my car the timing side is whisper quiet and I figure its gotta be like new in there.

It was making a loud rattle at startup and it was gradually getting worse. When I opened it up one of the tensioners were bad and I decided I would replace everything while I was in there.

Interesting. Have not heard of a tensioner just taking a ****.
Good call on doing it all though. That is the right way!

I've heard there was a TSB on a batch of VQs that had noisy timing sprockets.

My car does the same thing. But only for about a second when I start the car cold. I'll probably replace it eventually...but for now, the car runs fine. And it's one of those situations where if it ain't broke, don't fix it IMO...

My car had the rattle at start up from day one (when I purchased used two and a half years ago) but recently it started getting louder and lasting longer and I was just sick of it. Now she starts up beautifully with no rattle whatsoever, runs quieter too
