Oh. I'm not saying it's BAD for our transmissions or whatever, just that the MT-85 seems much more suited (read, engineered specifically for) our transmissions. They are both fine, but MT-85 is more fine.

Why are these boards relevant to this claim? Nissan 6spd evaluations are all the matters IMO.
Because I read what sorts of applications people found MTG to work best in. The transmissions folks found the best results in aren't made like ours--they have different sorts of metals inside, are being used in completely different applications, or both. Heck, I can even quote AMSOIL's page on MTG, " It is formulated specifically for maximum protection in the most demanding manual transmission and transaxle applications where an extreme pressure GL-4 gear lube is specified, including those where high horsepower/high torque engines and towing or heavy loads increase transmission stress."

They go on to cite its advantages for use in medium-duty trucks and muscle cars. They last time I checked, my six-speed would shatter if it hooked up to a 26000 lb Hino chassis or 1000HP drag racer.

Again, Red Line says, "Recommended for Nissan 350Z and 370Z (also most Maxima, Altima & Sentra)" on their MT-85 page and, "We think this fluid will be a hit with Nissan Z-car fans and Mitsubishi Evolution owners, as well as gear oil customers for a viscosity in between our MTL and MT-90." They made it for us! Just for us! ...Okay, not really, but it hits that sweet spot between MTL and MTG/MT-90.

The thicker weight of the MTG vs the MT-85 is simply not needed. 14.7/84.5 vs 12/64.3 @ 100C/40C, pour points of -51F vs -54F... I'm not seeing why anyone would want their six-speed powering through the added slush in the MTG, unless they lived in a metropolitan area in Texas with 2 million people.

I'd love to read more scientific evaluations of MTG vs MT-85 or MT-90 in the Nissan transmissions, but Google was only yielding intelligent posts by other manufacturer's fan boys. =/
You think that's bad? I live in a metropolitan area of 2 million people and had to order both the Redline MT90 and the Amsoil MTG.
Shhh, don't shatter my dreams of living in a real city with more amenities someday.

God Dangit! For four years I run MT-90 and now afterI order MTG, Redline introduces something that might have been what I needed all along! Oh well, I'll give you my thoughts on the MTG and you give me your's on the MT-85 ok? If I start hearing miraculous things like "my 3rd gear crunch is gone" though from many different members I'll probably switch over sooner rather than later.

In my car, 3rd gear is smooth as silk.
Now 4th gear, that one is a notchy b*tch

3rd gear is strange for me. Sometimes it's notchy as can be, while others it's as smooth as silk. I have noticed that as the car heats up and the weather is very hot, 3rd is smooth 99% of the time. It's when the car is in the warmup period that it crunches.

I guess I pay a lot more attention to this than most though as I used to have an '88 Toyota MR2 Supercharged that had plenty of bad synchros. I'm talking double clutch or people walking along the road hear me grinding gears bad. I worry that one day my Max will get to this point.

Heh, well, that's how the cookie crumbles? I decided to pull the trigger on the MT-85, got it from Z1 Motorsports, so I'll wait for it to get here and find where I can buy this hex reverse socket thing.

I don't have a third gear "crunch," I don't think, but sometimes it makes a noise/sort of feels like it buzzes off the synchros when I shift it in. I've always chalked it up to a bad, sloppy, or otherwise lazy shift. I'll do a proper writeup in this thread in two weeks or so.

Edit: Er, well, I chose to checkout with PayPal and when it directed me back to the Z1 site, it didn't give me an order number and claims I haven't ordered anything. Broken implementation of PayPal? I guess I'll wait and see if anything hits my bank account before reordering using their system. =/

The old gaskets should work just fine.
They will probably last longer than the rest of the car does.

if you don't mind the code, and or the effect (no back up lights) it really isn't a must to change. On our manuals that is the only purpose is to turn on the "back up lights" which mine haven't been working for about 7yrs now. I will change the sensor eventually... probably like you, when its time to re-do my transaxle oil. That is the best time to do it.

Edit: oh yeah and the code is just stored it doesn't throw a check engine light, or at least it doesn't on mine.

double edit: and no I don't care if the back up lights work, really not a problem for me... generally that rev of the motor and my pipes get the attention I need to let them know I'm coming.

Wow!! That's... A lot. The Z1 thing went through for me and the final cost was $15.80 a quart, shipping and tax included. It was $10.98 a quart before shipping.

Guy in Lexington: Woah... I never would have though someone in Lexington owned a Maxima six-speed! That's way too sophisticated and Japanese a product to show up there, I would have thought.

I'm in Richmond and have a 6spd as well, I have to replace my fluid here also, so has anyone figured out which is the most preferred?
