Have you tried a different OBDII scanner (like I know you can often have autozone scan the car, or even borrow a reader from O'Reilly's). I don't like going to the dealer because the last time I had the one near my check out my idle problem and adjust my timing. Turned out they couldn't figure out the idle and wanted time with the car (which means they wanted to replace everything), and said they did the timing. They charged me $140 for that, and I found out later they never did the timing advance.

I know this might sound stupid, but it happened to me on the weekend when helping out a fellow maxima owner. Make sure the car end of the OBD2 is actually secured to the dashboard. I tried reading a Maxima this weekend and it kept saying there was no connection. The scanner plug was nice and tight and felt like it was connected. But when I looked under the dash, the port was not in place. It had popped out. So basically I was plugged into air.

This happened to me, dealership could not read the codes so I had the LED for the CEL light replaced.
