Ever use one of these?

Pretty cool toy, got it from Harbor Freight for $25 with a coupon from the newspaper.

If you think you have a dragging brake or bad bearing, you can temperature check each side to see if you have a hot one.

I use it to check trailer bearings when I tow my boat to the river.

Glad I looked at the photo, gotta put the clamp back on the breather tube.

Yeah, nice toy. I got the one that's about the size of my thumb for $7 after coupon. Have to replace the watch battery after about a year. Used it on my turbo, measuring intake and intercooler plumbing as well as intake and manifold temps. Later, I just used it on my kids! LOL!

If you to into a Harbor Freight, they have them marked "On Sale" at $39.95
Look for the Harbor Freight flyer in local Sunday paper or check for it online, $25 with coupon.

These things are great for figuring out if your car has an overheating problem before it's too late.

As in they're far more accurate than your car's temperature gauge...

$19 infrared pyrometer sale 11/26

Looks like HF will have these on sale next week for only $19. Even if you're not sure you'll ever need one, get it anyway. Dragging brakes, IM temps, tire temps, A/C temps, catalytic & exhaust probs, even testing around the house like window efficiency, wall insulation, etc.

We had tons of those at work for heat scanning components. They just recently went all out and got us these:

Stupid expensive, but awesome!

I borrowed the Flir on a semi regular basis to check my tire and brake temps for track days and canyon runs with my old 350Z.

Hey, Troop... the next time you bring the car home after getting fully warmed up, could you leave it running and shoot the front water pipe with this tool? These are the two pipes in the front of the engine that wrap around the driver-side.

I'm curious about their operating temperature. See, I want to get new ones and have them powdercoated, but would like some exact numbers on how hot they get before committing to powdercoat.

Could you do that for me, buddy?

Will do it tonight when I get home from work, no problem.

BTW, I'm guessing they are about 180 degrees when hot; should run the same temp as the coolant is running, maybe a few degrees of heat soak from the exhaust immediately after stopping the car, but should not be too much.

LOL, well I was wrong on the 180 degree bet.

After a 30 mile drive in the rain at outside temps of 58°, I shot the temp on the top front waterpipe with the car idling in my driveway. 230° was the readout I got, supposed margin of error is 4%

My temp gauge always looks like it is on the low side, now I am really curious what temperature the coolant runs at.

If you can figure out how to order it online, the coupon code (the one under the barcode) is 86417441 and the ad is good until Jan 23, 2011

There is also a 7" variable-speed polisher on ad for $29.99, code is 86785409
