Wolfsburg Edition Jetta w/mods Claims.....
To have eaten Maximas for breakfast. This guy at the bar last night claims to have smoked Maximas with his Jetta. I heard him say that he had a chip (supposedly the 1.8T turbo upgrade that cost him $500) and exhaust with a custom catback.(That's the extent of his performance mods) Then later claims to have 260hp. I thought to myself there is no way in hell that a Jetta could have 260hp with those mods. The 1.8T stock only has 150hp stock. What do you all think!

300hp? no way in hell with just those three mods. the VW 1.8T has a tiny turbo for drivability and spool-up. That turbo is good for 240hp with bolt-ons and that's pushing it, maybe 240hp with race tune and fuel. I'd say above 230hp I'd be looking at a turbo upgrade. Now there are 340hp packages for the 1.8T but that requires lots of work (custom IC, turbo and turbo header, fuel system upgrade, etc...). 400 barely streetable horsepower is avail. for the 1.8T with motor work but requires higher rpm limits to maintain the powerband width. Plus turbos to supply that amount of airflow will be quite laggy.
Stock I think the 1.8T manual can do 15.5s at 90mph in good air. With chip n'boost (9psi-->14psi), exhaust, filter (basic upgrade), that car should run high to mid-14s at 95mph and be making about 230hp.

The Neuspeed Chip for the 1.8T's will crank those puppies up to 200HP or so, which would be enough to take out an automagic I suppose. But 260HP??
The Jetta versions of that 1.8T engine won't handle that kind of power (if that's what he really has) for long. They had to upgrade the internals just to handle 225 HP in the Audi TT version of it (or was it the 180 horse version, I dunno ) but anyways, that's pretty funny

Actually its possible....
I have a 00'A4 with chip and exhaust and i feel its as fast as my 00'max 5spd. The maxima truly might be faster, but the turbo makes it feel its got more, plus jettas use the same engine and should be lighter. So a stock max will have a pretty close run with it.......but 260hp??!!Of course its possible with a bigger turbo...but not with just a chip and exhaust.

The guy is right
A chip can add around 40hp easily on those turbos engine...and his catback exhust system also has a good amount of hp. The dude doesn't have 260hp...its around 240hp
My friend has a VR6...and he lurks around the fourms of the VW jetta/golf...and he sees those people who mod those 1.8T engines and they are really highly tunable. there are a lot of parts for those cars and they are light. The guy can kil a 2k1 5sp easily stock easily, moded would be a good race but they are light. between a 2k2 its gonna be a very good race.

Re: Wolfsburg Edition Jetta w/mods Claims.....
To get an idea of what the $500 chips can do, try:
www.awe-tuning.com
www.giacusa.com
For the most part, the competing 1.8t chips do similar gains. The thing to note is how far the torque jumps and how early in the powerband it comes. They must be monsters off the line.

those 1.8T's are so easy to mod. A guy with a 2000 1.8T w/ 5spd ran a 13.8 w/ slicks, chip,intake,exhaust. temp was about 60degrees and not much humidity.
go to vwvortex.com, i think thats the site. Those 1.8T's are meant to be modded and can get over 220whp EASILY. the engines are really strong and so is the tranny. VW's acutally have torque unlike the WRX or most turbo cars. I would watch out for those 1.8t's.
to bad VW is a warranty **** about mods. If they find out you have a chip, say good bye to your engine and sometimes computer warranty. they are even worst than nissan about mods

You probably mean low-end torque. The 1.8T's use a smaller turbo that spools very quickly so you get good power down low very quickly and minimal turbo lag. The WRX uses a larger turbo and runs more boost stock, but takes longer to spool, and hence more turbo lag and less low-end torque. It's a tradeoff in designing a turbo system.
