6spd maximas : Do you use 2nd gear ?

or you shift to 3rd directly ? 2nd is slow as chet, that's if it comes easily

seriously : how usually do you accelerate ? (not in a race setting) but normal daily driving in city....

A buddy of mine used to skip 1st and just start of in 2nd with his 6speed max all the time. Not the same thing, but the same concept.

I notice that I skip 4th alot with my 5 speed. I do it subconciously.

I start in 2nd fairly often if I am on the upside of a hill or maybe on a real flat surface. Shouldn't hurt the car one bit.

Considering I have a 6th-gen tranny with the 4.10 final, I find myself starting from 2nd from time to time, though never skipping gears after. In the rain, I use 2nd almost exclusively.

Rarely skip 2nd unless going downhill.
Skip 4th or 5th a lot.

Skipping a gear is actually one of the better ways to save on mileage and wear/tear on your car, as long as you aren't lugging the engine.

You guys who like to tach to redline can go straight from 2nd or 3rd directly to 6th if you like.

Interesting topic, actually. I like to keep my tach in the 2000-3000 range almost all the time, so when I'm shifting for mileage I usually shift at about 2500rpms. If I tach to 3000rpms, I skip the next gear.

Skip 2nd gear? That doesn't make any sense.

1st to 3rd is nuts... second gear hauls asssz.

That one I'll own up to. I skip 5th gear a lot.

Honestly, ever since I installed phenolic intake spacers, 4th gear is all kinds of fun. Gobs of power and deep tone to the exhaust in 4th gear.

Why the hell would anyone skip second gear? I could see skipping first or fifth, but second makes no sense.

I skip 3rd a lot and 5th quite often. 1st and 2nd get me up to speed and then I taper off with the even numbered higher gears. If I'm not in a hurry:

1 > 2 > 4 > 6

If I dont have time to warm the car up - meaning rev to 2k or so before actually driving - allowing the car to warm up - Before actually stopping fully I just drop it into second and start the car from a soft roll in 2nd - thats only if I havent warmed up the car

Of course everyone I would assume rev matches and can skip a gear in either direction - this is not uncommon -

As far as skipping second totally that just doesnt make sense

I dont drive the 6 spd hard - I just dont get on it very much - but you shouldnt have a problem shifting out of first around 2200-2400 into second - maybe you need to get some mt-90 in there or change out your synchros like majestic ken said

I only skipped 5th when I was pulling onto the highway, then I'd throw it in 6th.

If I'm straight cruising and not trying to run grandpa or be aggressive, then I go into 6th as soon as I can. Usually I can run about 40mph or so and be in 6th, less sometimes. So I do skip alot of gears sometimes.

If I'm running it out, then I don't usually.

1,2,4,(5 sometimes),6 or 1,3,5,6, just depends on the application. usually 1,2, so on, because 1->3 is a pretty small gate. 3 and 4 get skipped a lot, 5 bout half the time

On even days, I only use 2, 4, 6. On odd days, I use 1, 3, 5... It's just a personal preference.

I never skip any gears, but on a normal day my engine almost never sees above 2200, cruise 1750 typically unless on freeway when thats not an option

I usually skip 5th. For example when getting on the highway with a short entrance, I accelerate faster than usually and once I reached cruising speed in 4th; I shift to 6th to continue cruising.

For normal city driving, I try to avoid using 1st unless I come to a complete stop, but you could also use 2nd from a complete stop no problem.
